your body burns calories 24/7.
body needs 50cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma) and thats 1200cal/day for a person under 150lbs. a person over 150lbs needs about 70cal/hour.

Well i heard that by lack of sleep that assists in having you gain weight. So by sleeping then you don't gain weight from what ever reason causes it! ^^ You can't lose weight by laying in bed though..

You don't lose weight, but you do burn calories, and if you burn enough of those without gaining them back (by eating a ton of food), you will eventually lose weight.
