It doesn't mean there are other gods, it means people worshiped what they thought were other gods.
If you're looking to worship Zeus or Thor, I'm curious where you'd find a modern temple built in the past 100 years by other people worshiping them.
When God say, 'you shall have no other gods before me," he was telling people not to worship the other gods. And they stopped worshiping Zeus. That's why the temples for Zeus are all rubble and forgotten, and Churches open every day for people to gather and worship God.
Godspeed.

It basically means(if you read the WHOLE thing lol) to not put other things before God.
As Exodus 20:4-5 says...
"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me"

It means anything that puts distance between you and God. To some internet addicts it can even mean that Y/A is the god of their mind and their hearts and it seperates them from God. Also people did worship other god's look at history of Egypt and Maya for examples.

There are so called "gods" whom the Bible identifies as Demons.
1 Corinthians 10:19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.

It means that anything you put before God whether it be Television or Peanut butter, you make it a god. Whatever you have take the place of God is a god.

That's exactly it.
The christian god is a jealous god (says so in their bible) and wants you to worship him, only.
Feel free to worship whomever you choose. It's a choice.

i would not say that God is better than any of the others.
but if you want to go to the heaven of that god then you need to follow his rules.
me, i choose the other gods. something about jealousy turns me off.

It's just a means of intimidation to discourage questioning dogma and the belief system. It's about control.
