We recently got a puppy from a woman in our area. She is 6 weeks old and is a miniature poodle. She has a major flea problem. We cannot yet treat her with the monthly flea treatments ( Frontline, Advantage, ect.). We have been combing her daily (minus today) but it seems to make her more itchy and uncomfortable. Today we went to the pet shop to see if there was treatment for her but at her age there is little to nothing we can do! She must be 12 weeks old before she can get that treatment but i do not want to see her suffer. I read that puppies can get anemia due to flea infestation and do not want that AT ALL. The man at the pet shop said that, even at 6 weeks, it was okay to flea dip her. I also read in numerous places that that is not a good idea. I have no idea what to do for her!! Please help!!!!!!!!!

Call the vet. There are prescription meds the vet can give you. A new puppy needs to go in at 6 weeks for shots and deworming anyway.

Put a little garlic salt or powder in her food. Fleas hate garlic and will leave the pup. This is a home remedy for fleas and works well. There is also a medication vets give that have garlic in it to rid dogs of fleas. Just don't over do the garlic or your dog will smell like a spagehetti factory. Garlic is not harmful to dogs like onions. I would also suggest bathing her in Dawn dishwashing liquid for a couple of times to help move the fleas off her. This was suggested by a vet I know.

Be advised that the garlic treatment may take a while. The garlic gets into the dogs system and then is emitted through the pores and into the dogs blood stream. When the fleas bite the dog they get the garlic flavor and the scent from the pores. They hate this smell and taste and will leave. I hope this helps.

For the itching, you may wish to try children's benadryl.

Flea shampoo is ok for the pup. Ask your vet which one would be best to use. Do not get it in her eyes and make sure to wrap her up in a towel and stay in a warm place until she is dry. If she is getting a bad skin rash because of the fleas she may need some treatment from the vet. Make sure and clean your house and consider aerosol for the house to get rid of what fleas are there. Follow all the directions for the pesticide on the package.

There is a product on the market called Hyperdrug Flea & Tick Drops which can safely be used on puppies from two weeks of age. You can buy it on line. Go into www.hyperdrug.com.

I have used it on all my dogs for about three years and it is excellent. I can honestly say that I haven't seen a tick on them since I started using it and at one time, because they walk on heathland every day, they used to be covered with the pesky things.

Worth a try!

first if she has longer hair she would be better shaved so it's easier to treat.
Bath her with dawn dish detergent this will kill teh fleas on teh dog. You can use seven garden dust and sprinkle it on her.
Also treat your house as the rule is for every flea on your dog there is one hundred in teh house. Teh best is flea bombs but make sure you do the basement and attic.
Yo can also talk to the vet as she should get her first shots at 6 weeks and have her stool checked for worms.

Take her to the groomer. Who gave you a six week old pup? You can give the pup a bath but, be careful it doesn't get chilled.
