it is recommended to be fasting 8 - 12 hours prior to any testing for lipids, ie: cholesterol or triglycerides; so that your recent food consumption has cleared your periphery. In other words for true accuracy of your condition.

There is no need to fast before testing cholesterol levels. Providing it is just a simple cholesterol test and not a full lipid panel test, where a fast for up to 12 hours is required.

So the doctor can get a more accurate check of your cholesterol level. When you eat, your cholesterol naturally goes higher. A fasting level tells what your count actually is, instead of being raised by the food you've eaten.

No fasting required, however, it would be in your best interest to abstain from eating fried or fatty foods for a couple of days before the test!
