We have new neighbors. They moved in this past weekend. Their dog barks non stop. It starts at 6:30 in the morning and goes on and on. My husband works second shift and rarely gets to bed before 2 am. Four and half hours is not enough sleep, obviously. What should I do about this issue. We have considered going over and talking with them, but we're hesitant to do so because it may lead to problems, especially if they don't take our concerns seriously and we have to call the police. We thought about calling the police anonymously. What are your thoughts? What would you do?

I actually like dogs...so my wishing I had a gun to shoot the thing with really shows how irritating this is to me...so yes, killing it has been a standard joke in our house this week!

Tony, that was my first thought as well, going over and talking with them is the right thing to do. I just don't know how they will respond. We did already go over and welcome them to the neighborhood and introduce ourselves. My first impression wasn't the greatest but that is what it was, a first impression. Their sixteen year old son is already watching what my fifteen year old daughter does and when, so that scares me as well. So...I don't want to create any more problems than I have to. Just can't stand the dog barking all day anymore.

If they work, they may not know the dog barks so much.
I hate the idea of calling the police, but I think its best to keep your your complaint anonymous. Now and days It seems like neighbor disputes can get really ugly. I actually know someone that asked their neighbor to please make sure their dog did not go on his lawn... now the guy intentionally takes his dog on his lawn. I also knew a girl whose neighbor keyed her car b/c they felt this girl parked in "their" spot, even though spots were not assigned.
Some ppl are just not sensible and talking to them personally is just not worth the possible grief you may experience.
Hopefully they just don't know that Fido barks when they are gone and will try to remedy the situation, if not just keep call the cops.

First you need to find out if the law cares. Where I live, dogs can bark all day as long as they stop by 10 PM. If the law does work for you leave a note on the door. Make sure it is anonymous and nonthreatning but let them know you will call if they do not take care of the problem.
Then call the police if you need to. Do not confront them in person. It isn't safe anymore and you do not want to cause extra problems.
Also, call animal control and ask for their help. No matter what the law says, they may be able to help you.
I am not suggesting this but I had a neighbor who would let barking dogs loose and then call animal control since barking didn't violate any laws. All the people in the neighborhood hated this guy but he got to sleep when he needed to:)
I like the suggestion of masking the noise but I understand that the non-stop noise is annoying even for those who aren't sleeping.

Well i would go and ask the neighbour politely that the dog barking is annoying to you both and could they please do something about it like keep the dog or dogs inside
Believe that people who get dogs have a responsibility and some just neglect that so why get a dog if they cant look after a dog they have got why get it in the first place
I would ring the police anonymously regards the barking dog.
I know it isn't nice but if asking them fails i would take legal action it isn't nice to do but then again people have rights

you purchased 3 options: a million. do not say or do not something and enable those canine'spersistent you loopy and for as long as you reside there won't get solid relax or peacefully living. Hoping that faster or later you will get use to it and the barking will drown out. 2. Say something to your landlord and perhaps he will circulate them someplace else at nighttime. 3. circulate and come across a place with out canine around and function a peace of strategies which finally leads to a healthy emotional existence!

I live in an area where there are coytees..and, i do not have a dog, but some of my neighbors do, so, I welcome the barking of a dog, as is scares off coytees. I have had worse noise from former neighbors, i.e., rap music all hours of the day, with obvious drug selling activity (i got them out) thank God, and, then young adolsents, screeming up and down the street on their bikes, for three days, all day and night. i finally called the cops on that one.
What i do not understand, is why your neighbors are not concerned about fitting in to a new neighborhood, and, keeping a low profile, perhaps, the dog is upset, and will calm down (really everything is new to him). and, as, far as your teenage neighbor, (16) boys will always look at (15) year old girls...if that boy isnt looking at her I can assure you other 16 year old boys are...(its not as a 32 year old man looking at your daughter)..come on calm down, give these people a chance. your overreacting because you feel stressed out by what u THINK they are like.

Discuss it with them first, (hopefully amicably) preferably with a witness present. If they are unresponsive or hostile, file a complaint with animal control. If that doesn't work or their response is threatening, file a complaint with the police. Consider a council with other neighbors to reach a consensus and establish mutual support. Document EVERYTHING.
They DO NOT have the right to subject their neighbors to conditions that negatively affect quality of life or property values. Know your community rules (homeowners assn. for example), local laws and ordinances regarding noise and creating a public nuisance. Ultimately, you might have to file a law suit or class action suit, if local entities will not enforce the laws. Same goes for loud, especially late hours, music.

I'd get a 20 inch box fan and run that in hubby's bedroom. Set it on at least medum speed. Doesn't have to blow on hubby if it's not hot in the room.
Whir of the fan blocks out almost all noises. That is what I did when I worked night shift. There were dogs & little kids just right outside my window. The fan made it possible for me to sleep thru almost everything.

You have to talk to them first before you call the police. It is possible they are used to the barking and don't even notice any more.
Be careful how to confront them esp. if it will be your first introduction. You need to be polite and respectful. We all have faults and none of us are the perfect neighbor.
If things don't improve after your talk, yes you will need to call the cops. Most cities have noise ordinances and barking dogs can be a violation of law.
Good luck!

Find out what the local bi-laws are in terms of noise and barking dogs. You may have the law on your side, and a phone call to either the city and/or animal control, may result in a visit to your neighbours, stressing what the laws are and how they need to change their dog's behaviours.

Best to send them an anonymous letter telling them their dog is being a nuisance by his constant barking. You can also refer them to the city ordinance if your town has one.
If that doesn't work then you may need to file a formal complaint.
