Because they're such great leaders, all dictators have the unfortunate responsibility of accepting offers from their people to stay in office for just one extra term each time. What else can a dictator do when the people of his country are calling on him to graciously lead them again?

*sigh* It's a tough job being a dictator, they're never given the opportunity to retire

All dictators are corrupt, because of the unlimited power they wield. They are never answerable for their actions to anyone, except themselves. They all put relatives and close associates and their inner circle of trusted people to vital positions in the government (military, intelligence, police, industry, etc.). They all govern repressive regimes where human rights is virtually non-existent.

Unfortunately, the US had supported countless numbers of them in the past, and continue to support many of them at the present.

Power and control -- that's pretty much the key element.

Statistically, most have been male -- but that's a side-effect of the fact that most leaders historically have been male.

A dictator wants to control others, and seeks power to do it.
That's their defining characteristic.
