Really artificial selection is natural selection. We tend to falsely disassociate ourselves from nature when we are really part of nature.

Evolution, by definition, involves natural selection. Specifically bred dogs is not evolution, but breeding to favor specific mutations. Survival of certain mutations is also a part of evolution. If a dog strain mutated a characteristic that humans liked so much that they felt compelled to breed said dog, then this would be a "successful" mutation. The problem is that, if humans die off, the dog may be a competitive life loser. Thus, bred dogs are parasites of humans. The whole process, however, mutations and "natural selection" (which I take to include breeding or extermination by humans), is "evolution."

yeah that's where natural selection was tweaked when man began to use knowledge to tweak natural things. by analogy perhaps "the sin of knowledge". we have been changing the environment away from natural selection. away from evolution into the realm of mutation. I think mutation is the key word here. not creation evolution or natural selection. scientist should consider their own effect on what they find in that their procedures can taint the evidence just in what they choose to pursue and what they leave behind...

Evolution does what it needs to do for maximum efficiency. Canines (besides those we've bred) have evolved to their current most efficient stage. Just like humans or any other creature, microbe, etc. Evolution is only an adjustment to ones mind and body, for reproduction and overall heath, to survive. There is no natural selection. Its the microorganism that does it.

No of course not, we can artificially select for characteristics we prefer, in this case all that is needed is variability.

The distinction gets lost on creationist types however who still think its all to do with chance and randomness.

Right, specific traits are bred into the gene pool by mixing. Yes, exactly. Physical beings do not change, because God created them to be just like they are.

"Evolution" and "natural selection" are different words for the same theory. What you mean when you bring up dog breeding is "artificial selection," which is entirely different than "evolution."

Well, evolution has nothing to do with it. God created everything for a purpose.

It was never evolution. The animals were what they are all the time. It was adaptation. Some adapt to those surroundings better than others.
