I've heard from numerous sources its very dangerous, of course, no the safest city in the world, is it really that dangerous? Is it possible to visit alone at 18, or would taking an escorted tour be the best option?

Like any city, Los Angeles does have a few areas that are not as safe as they could be, but most of Los Angeles is relatively safe. As an 18 year old you may experience problems like trying to rent a car, or enter clubs that serve liqueur, but for the most part you should have fun here. You may enjoy a trip to Catalina Island for a day. The teenage girls on the beach will find your English accent "sexy". If you're really adventuresome there is always a day trip to Tijuana, Mexico.
Most tourists seem to want to see "Hollywood". It's not the glamorous city it once was, but "people watching" on a weekend evening on Santa Monica Blvd can be very entertaining. Just stay on main streets while there.

Depends on what you have in mind. I have lived here for over 60 years. Use common sense. LA can be a fun place. But you have no business being out alone very late at night. But just having fun during the day or early evening is fine. Go to; www.seemyla.com just be careful and aware of your surroundings.

I'm planning on visiting the place myself and I'm also 18. I think you'll be find, just stay away from rundown looking areas.
