wireless headphones tv volume?

I bought a wireless headphone set so that i could watch TV without disturbing my wife, but they require that some level of volume come out from the tv. This makes no sense. Is there a way around it?

On the set that I have, the TV set's speakers are inoperative when you plug in the headphone adapter...is yours different ?
