Me-ow i DO use litter i am enquiring about using shredded paper, and i change his litter every day if its required anyway, I am in the UK so my litter costs £'s not $'s ... i dont think its cheap i think its kind of recycling, and if you keep the box clean... you wouldnt get a stink...
I can see what people are saying about the burying bit..its ok to know though like someone said if you happen to run out of litter its a quick alternative

Yes, you can use shredded paper as litter. But it should be changed daily or every other day, since it smells faster.
Some people use shredded paper because their cats are sensitive/allergic to regular litter.
By switching litters, keep in mind some cats will not use paper, since it doesn't have that "granular" feeling to it. Every cat is different and some will simply not use the box, because it is in a different spot.
Make sure to keep some of the old litter on hand just in case kitty decides not to comply.
Hope this helps.

When my cat was declawed the Vet told us to use shredded paper until her paws healed. I had never heard of it or even thought of it. After she healed we continued to use it and added some baking soda on it. We do have to change it every day but we have a shredder. We have two cats and neither had a problem adjusting to it. The clay litter was messy, got hard as cement and was dusty. The shredded paper has been much better and easier to clean up after. To me it does not smell any worse than the clay. We did not finally go all the way with the shredded paper because we were cheap even though it is cheaper and is a form of recycling but because it is easier to use and we were happy with it. Everyone has an opinion and this is just mine. Hope this helps.

Its not about being cheap when thinking about using shredded paper for your cat box. There is Sodium Bentonite that is added to clay litter so the urine with clump it acts like an expandable cement. Imagine what that does to your cats insides after years of ingesting it when licking their paws. Another downside is I know I was going through about 40 lbs of this every 3 weeks so imagine adding up every one in the world that is dumping that amount in the garbage too, this stuff just sits in land fills and never breaks down. If you shred your old mail and newspapers stuff that was going in the garbage anyways then I would say that's a great thing to do and it doesn't hurt to save the $20 bucks every 3 weeks.

I use finely shredded paper and it semi-clumps, but as it is not as heavy as clay litter, it does not hide the smell as much for my kitty. However, whatever kind of litter I use, I clean it at least morning and night and often in between if I happen to be going by and see she has used it. I don't have any particular smell due to the paper.
i LOVE not having the clay dust plus, I have found that that due causes me lung irritation and I cough. With the paper, no cough. My kitty is ok -- for now -- but I don't like the idea of the long-term effects of litter dust for her or for me. I also love the lightness of the paper vs clay.
You have to give up something to get something, so I put up with the paper that more easily clings to her fur than litter which mostly clings to the paws. Clay litter is dark so shows up less on the floor, but it does track as well. My ultimate plan is to teach my kitty to use the toilet.
As I am in a place where I can never be sure of being able to find litter, my kitty has used newspaper, torn paper, shredded paper and 3 different kinds of clay litter. The first time we changed litter, she pee'd but not poo'd so I had to give her pumpkin to get things moving again. She has been ok with all the subsequent changes of litter. I found her in the street so she had no one to teach her about using litter box - she was a natural from 3 weeks old.

I was forced to switch to shredded newspaper because my cat kept getting urinary tract infections from the dust in the kitty litter. We have used it now for about 12 years and our cat immediately used it like litter and we never had a problem. It is cleaner because there is no dust or scattered littler to clean. We use litter tray liners, pull it inside out, bag it up, put another liner in the box, and add more shredded paper. Our cat never had a problem with it and it made our lives easier! It absorbs smell a little bit but because we change the litter every other day, there is no odor issue to deal with.

I've been using a paper shredder, and shredding whatever paper products go in the waste bin, cerial box's, flyers, magazines, cardboard box's, etc. Apart from it being recycling, the one cat that was declawed prior to joining our anti-declawing family, seems to like the paper better, it's easier on her sensitive toes. Plus I don't worry about litter dust kick-up urinary tract problems. One of my older cats got clumping litter stuck in her privates, and made her miserable. Another plus, it's light weight, and less of a haste to change the box than with any of the other litters I've tried. All around, it's been a positive experience for us.

We use it for our old cat who doesn't like the feel of litter, no matter the brand. It needs changed regularly but it's easier to deal with without the dust and weight of clay litter. When this old guy passes on to his reward (he is 15) we won't have any more cats so the shredded paper is best for us.

I have never herd of that one before, I line my cat box with brown paper bags. it makes the littler not stick to the bottom. I would think the shredded paper would need to be changed daily because unlike litter is does not clump but absorb and expand. I would go with the litter.
