Some people freak out when something doesn't fit with their viewpoint, whatever that viewpoint may be.

For others, this is genuinely the way they want to spread their opinion - get it out there on the internet, thumbs down to what they don't like, thumbs up to what they do.

Then again there are those who do it just for vengance - the spiteful b*stards who go around thumbs-downing everything you write, just to make themselves feel a little better about the fact that you don't agree with them.

A huge number of thumbs-down are probably kids messing about because they've got nothing better to do with their lives. Quite a lot of reported q & a's are caused by people just stirring up trouble for no reason, too.

There's the odd one or two that are probably slips of the finger, people getting trigger happy on their mouse buttons, or going for a thumbs-up and missing...

And then there are just those damn losers out there... you know who you are... c'mon, clicky that little thumbs-down button, you know you want to...

Ah. They're known as "thumb trolls." They will give thumbs down to anyone and everyone. Some of them have a certain criteria, such as they might not like a person's avatar or nickname. Others just decide they're going to thumbs down every answer that might be considered good. Some target those of a certain level or those that have their Q&A stats on the private setting.

No one really knows why they do it. But it's best not to read too much into it. Thumbs down doesn't do anything, really. Just make you feel bad if you go back to see that someone hit thumbs down on you. But it's hardly the worst thing in the world. So don't let them get you down! Just focus on the people who have given you thumbs up, votes, stars and best answer. They're the ones who matter.

I think people misunderstand what thumbs-up/down is supposed to mean. You are supposed to give people a thumbs up when they make a well reasoned, logical arguement, not just because you agree with them, and thumbsdown when they say something ignorant. Some people just give people a thumbsdown because they can't stand for someone to believe something different than they do.

Because you are on the internet. Anonymity can be a powerful thing. It points out strongly that you are dealing with a huge mix of peoples, ages, and attitudes and it often isn't a pretty sight. It also points out that you are interacting with people you wouldn't give the time of day to if you met them face to face. Choose to ignore what you cannot change. There are many people on Answers that have questions and answers that are meaningful. Go with the positive and forget the jerks.

Possibly you've offended someone in the past and they're attacking you by following where you are and voting against you. Try changing your name/avatar and see what happens.
