step of their life.
Examples; 'What are some non deployable USMC units?' or 'Why do I have to cut my hair?' or 'Will the military put my in onpost housing with my girlfriend?'
So d*mn selfish. Makes my blood boil. Then I remember my happy song:
WAH WAH WAH I WANT MY MILK AND COOKIES....WAH WAH WAH I WANT MY MILK AND COOKIES.....
Ahhhhhhh....All better now

Ok,ok....I was unfair to group ALL 80's cabbage patch kids together. I just see so many that give up at the first sign of difficulty. The group of Joe's I have for the most part want things handed to them or answered for them. They don't ever seem to want to work for anything. They all want to be called a scout but 99% of them can't navigate, call for fire, ID vehicles, run 5 miles etc. etc. All these things are skill level one tasks. I apologize if I painted with too broad a brush. And now I can't find a spell check button so forgive any unique spelling.

Hello pot this is kettle you're black. 80's babies huh? I'm an 80's baby. I signed up for the marines in June of 2001 when september 11th happened I literally went to my recruiter first and asked if I could leave for boot camp early so I could fight sooner. Why do I have to cut my hair? EHHHH wrong! I wear a haircut that fits current marine corps regulations to a T even though I'm out of the marines. I wear it because it looks good and it's very manageable. Will the military put my girlfriend in housing? Try I've had many girls on base and I didn't want them in housing with me. I HATE PEOPLE like you that say, "OH back in my day!." What is your day? In vietnam troops got away with using drugs, not many did them in the first place but they got away with it. You could drink in country, WE CAN"T! you could engage the enemy and not worry about 10,000 politicians who have never even thought about serving in the military arm chair generaling your actions and throwing you to the lions. So please think before you speak next time it might save you a punch in the mouth by someone you make angry. And no I'm not threatening that I would just tell you exactly what I just said.

I guess Dee Dee Dee sums it up for you doesn't it? I'll admit some kids join the military these days for the free college education and the large enlistment bonus... but hello that's how the recruiters promote military life. It's not easy to get they younger crowd to join in a time of war.
I'm a child of the 80s and I personally joined to escape my horrible home life and to get a free education. I have been in for 4 years now. In that time I grew to love this country in a way I never thought I would. I was very much a hippie when I joined, now I am a true patriot. I have grown up and become independent. I have a new family in my unit. And yes sometimes I do get "spoiled" by the military, by having a/c and cable in my hotel room. But I volunteered to put my life on the line for millions of people I don't even know, so they can sleep peacefully at night. Did you serve in the military? Did you have a choice or were you drafted? It's not an easy decision to join. I am currently training for a new career in the military. I am away from my friends and family. I will be separated from them for 6months. That is the worst part, not how my hair has to be styled or how nice my room is. The military gives us the nice room, or the option to have our spouse on base with us, to make life a little more tolerable. Until you sacrifice what our troops do every day, then you have no right to call them whiny cry babies. They deserve everything they ask for and more. And let me also state, that even the non deployable troops server a great purpose. If it wasn't for the folks that stay in the states, we would never get the supplies we need overseas, nor the lines of communication to our families. Maybe you should visit a your local VA Hospital, and then tell me they troops these days don't deserve to be "spoiled" once in a while.

Also... remember that some of the youngsters who post here are much younger than enlistment age... so their attitudes about life in the military are very immature.
My son is an 80's baby, and he serves with honor, pride, and distinction. He never whined about getting his hair cut, and doesn't ask for anything from the Marine Corps that the Corps doesn't provide

Basically because they are spoiled, whiny, overindulged individuals who have never had to follow rules or be accountable for their actions. However, this is a volunteer force and since these people enlisted, they must have done so for a reason - looking for boundaries and discipline, perhaps? The military should not bend to accommodate them. It may cost them or another soldier his or her life. (Not all of course - I come from a strong military background and do not want to put down the real soldiers who sacrifice every day)

The 80s was a hell of alot better than the kids we got now. Gen Y is way worse than Gen X. You should see how slutty the girls these days dress and now we have 12 year olds getting knocked up in 6th grade and smoking weed. To your question about haircuts, I was in the military for 7 years and I always would hate it when I had to get a haircut. Those cold, windy, English winters were hard on you when you had to have 'whitewalls'.

No need to lump them all together. I work with quite a few '80's babies, and none of the act in such a way. There are people from just about any generation that have that sort of mentality.

I think you spoke for a lot of people today! And it's all over in every corner of this country expecting handouts, not just expecting them but feeling it is their just due to get them!

Today they want rights but have forgotten responsibilities. JF Kennedy said "ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."
