There are breathing techniques such as inhaling while counting to 5 and exhaling while counting to five as many times as it takes to calm down. The best treatment for anxiety, however, is CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It teaches you how to recognize immediate thoughts that trigger anxiety and how to challenge them.
And although you do not want to take them, SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) also known as anti-depressants helpa great deal with anxiety. They prevent the neurotransmitter, Serotonin, from being reuptaken if/when it does not attack to a receptor site the first time it is released.
There are also benzodiazapines with are meant for anxiety, however I strong advise people against them. They cause cognitive impairment in all cases...sometime even permanent cognitive impairments (Eg. memory problem, problems with problem solving, speech impairment)

Anxiety is a normal part of life, but if it leaves you with a feeling of hopelessness, dread, or doom, or interferes with your daily life activities, see a doctor.
Some ways to cope with anxiety without medication are:
Pick a place and time to do your worrying. Make it the same place and time every day. Spend 30 minutes thinking about your concerns and what you can do about them. Only dwell on real concerns, not on worse case scenarios. Then let go of the worry and go on with your day.
Learn to relax. Try muscle relaxation, yoga, or deep breathing.
Exercise regularly. It can give you a sense of well-being and help decrease feelings of anxiety.
Get plenty of sleep.
Avoid alcohol and drugs and caffeine.
Get counseling.
There are different meds out there and only your doctor can determine which is right for you, if any.
Good luck!

I have had problems with anxiety for many years too. It gets worse with stress. I tried the med thing for a few years, and it did work, but I'm not much for med taking myself. I took Zoloft, a med that you take daily. It worked great. I switched to prozac for a while, because I felt Zoloft was making me sleepy. Prozac worked well also. I'm off all drugs now, because I just don't like them. I try to exercise daily- cardio and weight resistance, and I practice deep breathing when having a particularly hard time. I have good days and bad.....I think that's just the way I am, and I've accepted it. Good luck

Whoever said that beta blockers block adrenaline needs to be slapped with a wet trout.
You cannot cure anxiety, you can only learn to cope with it. Physical activity, particularly jogging or biking, really helped me out personally. Try it, it's worth it. When you're physically exhausted, suddenly anxiety is the last thing on your mind. It's strange, but the impact of physical exercise on mental state is enromous.

Like anything else - it takes practice and retraining your brain. I was reading an interesting book today about "Neuro-Linguistic Programming." (NLP). It was not about depression or anxiety, it was more of a business tool. But it really made a lot of sense.

I spent many years trying to beat it, and I finally broke free. But it was after trying a whole lot of things, some which didn't work very well. It took time, but I am 10000000% better! YAY!

Beta blockers work very well............
They block the action of adrenaline upon the heart and stop the anxiety feelings. They don't stop you from worrying though.
Valerian is a herbal remedy which can relax you - clinical trials have shown it to be of use.
Relaxation strategies......Yoga......meditation etc.
Exercise
Counselling
