Catnip is a herb similar to what we would have like cannabis.I dont agree with it as years ago i bought my cat some in natural form and thedirections on the packet said to rub it on things it played with etc.The next thing i knew was it was going absolutely crazy and running around and clawing things and going mental over my furniture and meoaing really loudly. Its eyes looked completely lost and i was really worried about it.I know its robably light entertainment for a few but it wasnt the normal character of my cat and i have never purchased anything since that has catnip in it.Some may disagree but its not nice stuff and i do honestly think my cat was totally confused when i used it.

Nepeta is a family of about 250 species of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae. The members of this group are known as catnips or catmints due to its long known liking by cats. Nepeta pleasantly stimulates cats' pheromonic receptors. When cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw, chew or lick it, leap about and purr, often dribbling saliva. Some cats will also growl or meow. This reaction only lasts for a a while before the cat loses interest. But after about two hours they'll come back for more, so to speak! Very young kittens and older cats are less likely to have a reaction to catnip, and there seems to be an hereditory factor involved. If Mum reacts so will her kittens. Apparently Lions and tigers are also sensitive to the effects of catnip. My young cat reacts but the 15 year old no longer does. Almost all of the many cats I've had over the last 50 years have had some reaction. I've never known it have any ill effects and my Vet says it is harmless to them. So ignore the first answerer who said it was like Cannabis. If he'd ever used Cannabis he'd know why they call it 'dope' and catnip certainly doesn't make a cat dopey!!! Over use of the spray would cause a stronger reaction, especially if it was on several items. It's designed to be put on scratching posts to encourage the cat to use it, but I tend to just attach a catnip toy on string. most come with them attached nowadays.

Catnip mice are exactly what they sound like: toy cloth mice of vartious sizes filled with catnip. There are lots of shapes besides mice & are fun to play with, even for cats who don't enjoy catnip (a fair number of them simply don't react to it).
Catnip spray is a liquid distilled from the catnip herb. If your cat enjoys catnip, but you don't want the mess of the actual herb, you can use catnip spray on scratching posts, toys or whatever else you want to 'enhance' for your kitty. Some brands seem to be better than others, so you might need to let your guy try out a couple different types.
Although you can let you cat play with catnip mice any time, it's best if you give him the herb or spray no more than once or twice a week so he doesn't get too accustomed to it (which would make him bored with it).

catnip is a herb type plant which in a way acts like "weed" or "Pot". It puts them on a high, and they become much more playful. Try rubbing it on scratching posts to discourage them front scratching furniture, doors and walls. My cats have it on their posts and i love watching them go loopy!

I dont have a cat but my friend does & she buys cat nip. She puts it inside cat toys & on the scrathing post. It looks like are bits of straw but has a strong smell that cats are suppose to love. Hers does it goes crazy with the toys whizzing round everywhere but she first used it to encourage him to use the scrathing post & it stopped him scrathing the furniture.
