"Red light" area as you put them, have pretty much been eliminated, especially during the Rudy Giuliani era as Mayor.

For the most part, you can find X-rated bookshops, on 8th Avenue between W. 42nd Street and W. 49th Street. As for areas that have prostitutes, again, a lot of those areas have been cleaned out completely.

It used to be W. 30th Street to W. 27th Street from 10th to 12th Avenues, but that has since been changed to the Chelsea Nightclub District. There is a huge police-presence there, especially on the weekends.

Also used to be W. 44th Street to W. 46th Street from 10th to 12th Avenues, but that too has been changed into a nightclub area, so no more prostitutes.

Believe it or not, the Upper Gramercy Park Area, Park Avenue to Lexington Avenue from E. 30th Street to E. 27th Street used to be loaded up until about 7 years ago. Not really sure about now.

In Spanish Harlem, on Park Avenue from E. 122nd Street to E. 125th Street and on E. 124th Street from Park Avenue over to 2nd Avenue, but a great many of those "girls" were drug addicts.

In Queens, just over the 59th Street Bridge, in Long Island City, there used to be a large area on both sides of the bridge (2 separate precincts). The area north of the bridge (covered by the 114th Pct.) was from 40th Avenue to 36th Avenue from 23rd Street all the way down to 10th Street. And on the south side of the bridge (108th Pct.) the area was from Queensboro Plaza South to 44th Avenue from 27th Street down to 11th Street. That area though has been cleaned out, due to the regentrification of the Silvercup Studios.

In the Bronx, the Hunts Point area, which is East of Bruckner Boulevard, was filled with prostitutes, but the NYPD's "Operation Losing Proposition" changed all of the that. You can still find X-rated bars/clubs in that area and some locals making extra $.

In Brooklyn, the industrial section off of Pennsylvania Avenue, but I'm unsure of its condition now.

There might be others, especially underground locations, but these are the 1's I know of.

The origin of the term “red light district” is unknown. The term “red light district” is cited in Lousville in 1896, Denver in 1897, and New York City, Houston and San Antonio in the year 1898. In 1900, New York police made a major effort to clean out the “red light district” of the lower east side.

A “red light district” is where shady transactions occur, such as prostitution, drug use, and gambling. Red lights sometimes were used at these establishments, but not always. One theory is that the red lights were lanterns used by visiting railroad men

A red-light district is a neighborhood where prostitution and other businesses in the sex industry flourish. The term “red-light district” was first recorded in the United States around 1890, and derives from the practice of placing a red light in the window to indicate to customers the nature of the business. The color red has been associated with prostitution for millennia: in the Biblical story of Rahab, a prostitute in Jericho aided the spies of Joshua and identified her house with a scarlet rope.

Some say the origin of the red light comes from the red lanterns carried by railway workers, which were left outside brothels when the workers entered, so that they could be quickly located for any needed train movement. Others speculate that the origin comes from the red paper lanterns that were hung outside brothels in ancient China to identify them as such. It was said that the lights were thought to be sensual.

In more recent years the red-light district term has its name from the red lights that hang from the district’s brothels.

Are women inferior by nature? or do you think it's certain things we do (or don't do) that make us so? I'm just curious.
