You should be doing cardio / aerobics as often as possible, say 30 mins every day or every other day. Preferably on an empty stomach as this way you are going to burn body fat instead of food for energy. Also train your abs a few times a week, as this is the target area.
Your diet should mainly consist of white meat, fish and vegetables. You can throw in some wholewheat breads and cereals when you are hungry, but not too much. Try this for a while and i guarantee the pounds will just melt away from your abdominal area.

Sit ups are good, but only sit up to the part where it starts pulling. Also, try to keep your back pushed into the floor at all times, and keep your hands on your head but don't push your head up with your hands. Another good exercise is if you hold 1 full baked beans tin or something in each hand, sit up straight on a chair and turn left from the hips, wait 5 seconds, turn forward, wait 5 seconds, turn right, wait 5 seconds, turn forward, wait 5 seconds and repeat 20 times three times a day. This is not hard work but there are good outcomes!

have you tried doing leg raises? this works the lower part of your abs. to do this lie flat on your back. keep your legs straight and raise them about 45 degrees - then back down again - as you lower your legs you will feel your lowers abs hurt - do as many as you can and build up each day- DONT LET YOUR LEGS TOUCH THE FLOOR UNTIL YOUR LAST REPETITION - YOU SHOULD KEEP THEM ABOUT TWO INCHES OFF THE GROUND.
