I know liberty is like time off on the weekends or nights while in port/etc... Do Navy Personell have to stay in a hotel if they're on leave, or do they come back to their ship/base once they're done?

Also, what's it like for submariners? I know that if they're on special missions, etc..., they don't get too much port time.. Do they get to see the sites once in a while?

I see some pretty good answers here, but I am just going to add one thing. If you are on a ship and are in port in another country or any other than their homeport, you have to return to the ship by a certain time every night.
If your ship is in your homeport or you are on shore duty, its just like having a regular job. You go to work and when work is done you can go home. Some people live on the ship or barracks on base (for shore duty personnel), but most get places out in town.

Okay, Liberty and Leave are two different things... Leave is vacation that is charged against the 30 days a year you earn. Liberty is "time-off", and normally you have to stay within 50 miles of the ship or squadron.

My Leave was always spent at HOME (or in a hotel when driving and taking leave with a PCS move).

Liberty, I mostly spent at the beach and rarely in the clubs. On Liberty when I was deployed or still junior enough to live in the barracks, I'd just head back to MY rack. Why spend the Money for a hotel ??

Though I DID go in for a suite on liberty in Singapore, Accapulco, and ONCE in Hawaii.

You know what, i cant really say, i leave this week for basic training for the navy, but i wouold imagine that a sailor would be able to get a hotel room for the weekend, and be able to go around and explore the port they're in, just as long as there back to there ship on the last day of liberty at a certain time. I know at basic trianing though when you get liberty for the weekend after graduation you can go out with parents and friends but you must be back to your barracks (ship) everynight at a certain time. But other than that i wouldnt know wheather you can get a hotel room or stay on the ship. But i would image you can stay off the ship for the full 48 hours.

They usually go to bars, hotels and night places as an escape from the ship. During the day, they are tourists. It depends on the people but there is always fun to be had visiting new and strange places.

Many subs go for months without liberty and I would imagine their liberty ports are fewer. I never actually saw one while I was on liberty.
