They are a great help but rarely 100% effective, as the tiny fleas can hide in skin folds and other places and escape the shampoo. If you shampoo regularly it will reduce the fleas to almost nil... but Over-shampooing can also be bad for the dog, causing rashes and skin problems, as it removes the natural oils, which protect the skin and hair.
The best preventative measure is "frontline", this gets absorbed into the animals blood and the fleas literally starve to death. You need to do this about twice a year....but your vet will advise if you telephone.

Flea and tick shampoo will rid your pet of the pests, but your pooch may get them again if they are living in your carpets or outside where they might lay in the sun etc. You will end up having to bathe them repeatedly over time to keep them from multiplying. What I would HIGHLY recommend is a thing called Advantage. You can go to your local PetsMart and walk up to the Banfield counter (or go to any veterinarian) and ask for a dose for your pet. All you do is place the medicine on the back of their neck and you are Flea free for 6 months because the medicine will keep on killing the fleas until there are none left, without bathing or reapplying! They will give you the recommended dose based on the pets size and weight. I used it on my new kitten I got from the animal shelter and I've never had to worry about it since. It works like a charm! It's very affordable! It can't get any easier than that!

Flea shampoos are excellent, they kill fleas on contact. After a flea bath you can rest assured your dog is truly clean. However, they do not protect against the future. Some advertise they do, but I can assure you there is no way to scotchguard your puppy. Flea colloars are great, so is spraying your yard once every few months during the summer, and killing the fleas and ticks before they ever get to your dog.

I've used it for years... but if you want the best way to get rid of fleas... bath your dog with this shampoo then go to a GUARANTEE.com and purchase spray to spray in your house and around outside and then get Advantage or Frontline for your dog at the Vet

the problem with flea shampoo is it will kill teh fleas on the dog but it does not repel fleas.
the general rule is for every flea on teh dog there is 100 in teh house so as soon as teh dog is rinsed and dries the live fleas are on her again.
Fleas do not live on teh dog tehy jump on tehm to feed.
