I am using a recepie from Portugal - for a soup. It consists mainly of vegetables and sea food. The whole thing should cook for about 2 hours - when should I put the shrimp in? Is it ok to cook them for 2 hours?

heck no...put it in in the last few minutes maybe 5 minutes before the soup is done...if you want the flavor just boil the shells and make a stock and add to your soup...if your leaving them in the shells make it about 15 minutes before its done

I definitely wouldn't cook the shrimp for two hours. Normally, it doesn't take very long for shrimp to cook. I would just throw them in during the last 5-10 minutes (maybe turn the heat up during this time) and keep an eye on them. When they are no longer grey, but are instead pink and white then your shrimp are done. I'd just stick to using your own judgment. That soup sounds good! Now I'm going to have to dig up something to cook around here!

If you cooked your shrimp/prawns for two hours they would end up a rubbery inedible mess. It will only take a couple of minutes at the most for even large prawns to cook. They'll curl up and turn white.

i admire my prawns cooked in garlic butter with some chopped parsley for seasoning. while cooked, placed right into a colander, then onto some sheets of paper towel to soak up the surplus butter.

If the recipe says so. Especially if it's in liquid. Shrimp are done when they are opaque.
