Well is uppose because it's near to Britain, it is our natural defence against other countries, such as the Nazi's during the second world war and well beacuse when Britain controlled nearly 3/4 of the world, they used it the most, and still do today with all there major docks just minutes away from the channel.

It is so called in England because it divides England from Europe the same as the Irish Channel divides Ireland from England.
I am still searching for the Welsh and Scottish channels.

No nothing to do with that because the name was on maps as far back as 1450 and in other maps since then when it had name of English Sea. Just named for main country it is by.

that is only the british name for foreigners call it something different and we are hardly going to call it the french channel are we. in fact the french call it LE MANCHE
