The heat will last 21 days. She will 'spot' for 10 days and then the blood will start to dry up but don't be fooled that it's all over when this happens. Females usually ovulate between the 11th and 14th days. These are their 'mating days' and at this time they are very receptive to any male that comes along. Keep a watchful eye on her for the whole 21 days as she can still get pregnant right up to the last day.
If you take her out for walks make sure she is on a lead at all times and try and walk somewhere where you know there won't be any other dogs because once a male dog gets the scent of a female on heat there is no deterring him.
Some people recommend putting diapers on their females when they are on heat but I would never advise this because it is natural for the female to lick herself in that area to keep herself clean and by putting diapers on her you are preventing her from doing what comes naturally.
I confine my females to the kitchen when they are on heat where there is a tiled floor which can be easily mopped. Most females will clean up after themselves anyway.
Good luck.

It is not a horrible procedure to spay your dog as mentioned by bullybreedmom. This is an invasive surgery but dogs recover much fast than their human counterparts, you can not compare dogs to people. We are not the same. Dogs do not feel pain like people do. And for one if you do not spay your dog it does lead to cancer and uterine infections which can take the life of your pet to soon, spaying your dog benefits your dogs life. You will prevent the unfortunate event of unwanted litters and more puppies/dogs ending up in the shelters and being euthanized. If you consider it inhumane to spay a dog then what do you have to say about euthanizing dogs as much of the unplanned litters of dogs end up that way. Its much better to spay and allow your dog to recover for a week or two and live a normal long and healthy life than to cause all the other bads to not spaying your pet. And if your dog goes through its first heat you increase her chances of mammary cancer by 80% and by the second heat and third heat its pretty much inevitable. Uterine infections are also typical in dogs and can take the life of your dog very young, my aunt's golden developed this by 2 years old and was on the verge of death when the life saving procedure of spaying her saved her life and has allowed her to live many more years. If you dont want to spay your dog bullybreedmomma then thats your decision but dont tell others not to do it to their dogs thats their choice to make and they need to know why it is valuable. If you want to decrease your dogs life span and cause your dog more pain in the future continue with what you are doing. Sorry about the rant on your question but this person needs to know the facts. I do recommend you spay your dog but that is your decision and yours alone to make. But heat cycles typically last 3 weeks.

About three weeks. Good for you for not giving your puppy a hysterectomy! It's a nasty, life changing operation, ask any woman who has had one. Google "Scooty Pants" to help with mess. Remember, if you are considering breeding your dog, you WON'T make much of a profit, so it must be to better the breed. Also, dogs bred before they reach maturity (at least 2 years old) are more likely to die in childbirth (puppybirth?), more likely to never be able to be bred again, and have behavioral problems including not being able to take care of the pups. AND, you should allow at the very least 1 1/2 years between breedings. Anything else is very bad for your best friend!

First times are a little stressful for the pup because they do not always understand whats going on, tummy rubs and comfort go a long way. Mestrual cycles in dogs occur every six months and usually last 10-20 days.
