I live way out in the sticks w/no neighbors in site. Over the last few days I've been wondering if some dreg has been stealing my mail. Then yesterday I saw it being delivered and figured I'd take the important stuff and leave the junk mail. Sure enough, it was gone this morning.
I'd like to hide in the bushes and sniper the thief with my .223, but that would get me in a heap of trouble. I don't think it's legal to shoot people for stealing mail, even if they are worthless meth-heads.
Anyone have a low-tech, legal idea on how to teach these pricks a lesson or catch them in the act that doesn't involve hiding in the bushes for hours on end?

How about a scorpion in the mail box?
Bad idea. Then how about this? Get one of those ink bombs that banks us when they're robbed? Wrap it in a package and put in your mail box. When the thief takes your mail the charge will go off, covering him in blue dye.

Don't blackmail anybody. That'll open a REAL can of snakes that could result in homicide. Raise caine about it. Talk to your coach, talk to your principal. Be a real pain in the butt over it. Here's your chance to buck the system and be in the right about it. Coaches and principals are sensitive about their school's image. There may be five homicides and seven rapes a week in your school but administration types are sensitive about their institutional image. They all want a squeaky clean resume'. So some acne faced kid comes along and starts rocking the boat and making waves they gonna do something about it. Catching the guy? Hiding in the old shower area? Sounds like cutting a class. Don't do that. Don't do anything to give the administration types something to come back on you with. They will want to in order to shut you up before you get the PTA all excited. Select about ten dollars worth of plant money. A five and five ones. Record the serial numbers and write across the back of the bills in red marker ink. 'THIS MONEY HAS BEEN STOLEN FROM JOHN DOE. CALL THE POLICE !!' That oughta go over real big in the school cafateria. If nobody steals your plant money. Take it to the bank. Explain what you did and they'll replace it.

Okay, lets look at this logically for one moment. By your own statement this person knows where you live and is obviously okay with breaking the law. On the other hand, you have no idea who they are, what they look like or where to find them. And you want to mess with them ? Why not just take your .223 and shoot yourself in the foot, you'll accomplish about the same.
What they are doing is illegal and makes me as angry as you are, but you have to keep a thinking mind in all this or it snowballs on you. If you do something to weird them out and they start taking it out on your house or vehicles then you will want to "up the ante' " even more and it doesn't take a genius to see the blue lights flashing here.
Lock up your mail and/or remove the source of their temptation. Speak with the mail service and tell them what is going on and ask them to hold your mail for pick up for a week or two until the meth-head moves on.
I agree with you, would love to bust some heads here, unfortunately our current legal system does not allow that action.

Why waste time and energy trying to catch the idiot? Just fix the problem at the source. You can get a mailbox with a lock on it. The top of the box is a dropchute, so the mailman can deposit the mail, and the bottom is a secure receptacle that only YOU can get into.

get a locking mailbox, or have your mail delivered to a PO box... you can put a camera on your mailbox, but unless its a very good camera it won't produce an image that will be admissable in court... any booby trap you put out might injure your postman, so that is not a good idea...

Maybe you could set up a fake camera that they think might be real, it would cost a little less than a real one, but what would they know, maybe a mouse trap in the box....lol.
