The apple is a traditional symbol for the fruit eaten by Adam and Eve. I'm not sure where it first began being represented as an apple but I have seen ancient illustrations and such while I was in Europe using an apple or something simmilar. Maybe the first one to use it just didn't know what to use for it and decided he was best able to draw an apple.
What they actually ate was the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good & evil.

That wasn't the original sin. The original sin was when Satan told Eve that God was lying.
God speaking:
Genesis 2:16,17 The day you eat from the tree of knowledge of good and bad you will die.
Geneis 3:4 At this the Serpent told the women, "you won't really die at all."
That happened long before she ate the fruit.
John 8:44 Tells that the original sin was what Satan did in the garden. Calling him the father of the lie and a manslayer.
Because of him two people and all people die.
That was the first time anyone had ever rebelled against God.

No where in the bible is the forbidden fruit referred to as an apple. The original sin was disobeying God, not eating an apple. Although I will admit of all the fruit, Apple is my least favorite, nothing to do with my belief.

It says the fruit of the tree of good and evil. Not an apple. That came around during the Renaissance.

The bible does NOT say it was an apple. During the middles ages, apples were regarded as aphrodisiacs; thus they were often used in paintings of the expulsion to represent the fruit. The only fruit mentioned in that section of Genesis is the fig.

The original sin was pride. And there's no evidence that the forbidden fruit was an apple.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." Genesis 2:16-17
I don't see any apple there.

The original sin was not eating from an apple. God told Adam and Eve to not eat from one tree within the garden-the tree of God and Evil. But, satan came along and said "Eve, if you eat from that tree, you will be just like God" so she did, and she told Adam to eat from it to. They diobeyed God. That was the original sin, and thats why they were kicked out of the garden, and thats why sin started.

Because it's commonly believed that Eve ate an apple, but according to the new Kirk Cameron Institute for Creation Research Studies, the fruit she ate was actually a banana.

Oh, boy. First of all, even though its not generally taught in the Churches, the manuscripts are quite clear that Adam and Eve were the first to sin IN THE FLESH. The actual first sins were far before Adam and Eve or anyone else ever came here in the flesh.
They in no way committed the "original" or
"first" sin. The first sins were committed when Satan rebelled and many of our people followed him.
Now as for the apple:
Eve did not eat fruit. When Adam and Eve sinned, they tied fig leaves together to make what? Was it a mask for their mouths because they were ashamed of eating an
apple? No. They made aprons to cover their private parts - those parts that participated in the sin they were so very ashamed of.
Thats your answer, so you can stop reading now UNLESS you want to know what exactly Eve DID do that ticked God off so much, and it is as follows:
Eve was beguiled by the serpent (Satan);
That word "beguiled" means "to wholly seduce". Eve had sexual relations with Satan, and that fact is all but cemented in truth in the original manuscripts of Gods Word. God was very angry with Eve, and told Satan for what he had done, that he (God) would put emnity between His seed (Satans) and her seed (Eves and her husband Adam).
Then God told Eve that He would multiply her conception: He did, by 2, exactly:
Eve was pregnant with twins. One pregnancy of two separate conceptions.
Where in Genesis you read that Eve bore
Cain and then AGAIN bare his brother, Abel? That word "again" is not in the manuscripts: instead, its written "continued in labor". When you have a baby and then your labor continues and you have a second baby, what does that mean? TWINS. Both boys took their offerings to God at the exact same time because they both reached the age of accountability at the exact same time: TWINS.
Abel was in fact Adams son; but Cain was Satans son (yes, the manuscripts say child, seed, SPERMA). This was what all the animosity was between the two brothers, or actually "half-brothers" is far more accurate.
If you find it hard to believe that Cain was not Adams son, go to Genesis 5:1 where you find the complete geneology of Adam:
you won't find Cain listed there, because Cain was not Adams son; likewise in Chapter 4 is the complete geneology of Cain: you won't find Adam listed in it because Adam simply was not Cains father.
When Cain was thrown out of the garden, God placed a mark on him. Ever hear of the mark of the beast? This is its beginning,
right here on Cain - the mark of his blood
father, Satan. This is why Cain told God he was afraid that if anyone were to see the mark they would kill him.
The reason God was so angry with Eve was not just because she disobeyed - this
sin was far more dangerous than most people realize: Satans purpose was that
through Eve, down the generations, womb-to-womb, was to come the Christ child.
If Satan could interject his own seed into that line of lineage, he would then become an integrel part of the lineage of Jesus Christ. Remember that the controversy from the very beginning was that Satan wanted the throne and position of Christ.
Satan hasn't stopped messing around ever
since - the next time he tried this same sort of thing was at the time of Noah when he sent the Angelic Beings to mate with human
women. Noahs family were the only ones
left who had not mixed with the nephillim;
Again, Noah's family being of the Adamic line, were keeping that line of lineage clean
for the Christ to come thru it -
Anyway, Cain went off to the town of Nod where the 6th day creation of the races had settled, and he found a wife and had lots of decendants, called Kenites in Scripture.
These Kenites even made it thru the flood of Noah, and you will find them alive and well and doing scribe work for the Tribe of Judah in 1chronicles 2:55; they lived around Judea and mixed in calling themselves "jews", which is only a short form for "the Tribe of Judah". There are only two ways for you to legally be a "jew";
first, be born in the bloodline of the Tribe of Judah, and second, live in the geographical location of the town of Judea. BINGO! This is what the Kenites did - they took up any position of authority, and became judges,
lawyers, scribes, and yes, even Priests in the Temple.
When you read Rev 1 and the forward chapters, John is given a message for each of 7 churches: Only two of those 7 churches were approved by Christ, and both of the approved ones taught the exact same thing: who are those who say they are jews but do lie and are of the synagogue of Satan? The answer: These Kenites, or fully translated: "sons of Cain".
They are the decendants of Satan himself,
and thanks to Eve, they are still on the Earth today.
There is alot more to the Word of the Living God than "love thy neighbor".
