Why is it that in cowboy movies everyone shoots from the hip? I've never seen one where they take the gun up and aim..

Does anyone still do it like that these days?

The only reason i can think of doing that is not to get burned by the gun powder coming out of the back of the gun. I remember i had an old .22 senorita and everytime i shot it, i would get burns on my forearm from the gunpowder..

Most of the "cowboy" guns were single action, it is easier to "fan" the hammer when it is closer to you, as apposed to being at the end of your arm. You notice the non-gun holding hand sweeps back and forth across the gun, this is to c0ck it to prepare for another shot. It is harder to do this if it is farther out.

In all honesty it never died, there are quick draw competitions all over the United States.
It’s not restricted to six gun either.
Just watch some of the combat matches and watch just how many don’t have those semi autos up for true sight alignment, their using just the front blade.

As weapons have evolved, so has the competition.

But the SAS ( Single Action Six ) quick draw competition is alive and well.
The use every under the sun for targets from old bowling bins to human Silhouettes and every thing in-between.

Shooting from the hip is a weapon retention technique now. There is something called the turnip method where practitioners typically shoot from the hip.

The speed of shooting from the hip is often overrated. look at top practical shooters drawing times and then look at top quick draw guys drawing times. just a small advantage and the quick draw guys are REALLY close to their targets.

The quick draw and shoot from the hip died out with the Old West and Cowboys. It was a faster way to draw and fire and back then it was actually done that way. The only thing going on today that is comparable is Cowboy Action Shooting Clubs and Contests/ Matches. It's a relatively new "sport" and is gaining in popularity. Only difference is the targets don't shoot back....lol
They all dress in Cowboy period clothing, and shoot the antique or reproduction firearms of the times. They camp out just like in the old days and cook their meals over a wood fire. I went to a contest last year in Texas that even had a Chuck Wagon serving food like on the old time cattle drives.Pretty cool..

If the target is close then shooting from the hip is pretty accurate and very fast.

I love shooting my mossberg 500 from the hip

Its been referred to as instinctive shooting, and can be very effective and lethal with practice.* If one learns to shoot that way there is no need to aim when using it.*
