A cream based soup scorched on the bottom pretty badly. I tried simmering vinegar in it and scrubbing with salt.
Anyone have any other ideas, or is it history?

It might take several days of soaking. Each day pour out water and add new water, or you will have an stinky mess. Once you have all the scorched stuff off you can use a sos pad to remove the dark color. Good luck to you!

What I've done is filled it with hot water and a good squirt of dishsoap. Then let it sit overnight. The next day I scrub with an older green scrubbie, then repeat the hot water and soap and let it sit another night. Repeat until you think it'll be the last scrubbing. Then use a brand new green scrubbie pad.

Just don't try using the dishwasher! The drying cycle will bake it on even worse and then there's no hope.

Don't give up on it. Try soaking with soap and hot water again, make a paste with baking soda and try scrubbing with a plastic scrubber. Some people also swear by oven cleaner and a brillo pad for a really bad pan.

I would hate to lose one of my stock pots so I'm with you in trying to save it. This happened to me, too.

I figured I didn't have anything to lose, so I sprayed Easy Off (the one that you don't need to heat your oven to use) on the stuff and put the pot in a garbage bag overnight because that's how I clean the stainless racks for my grills.

It took some elbow grease, a plastic scraper and a scratchy sponge (not the metal kind) but it came off. There was a bit of opaqueness on the metal but the pot cooks fine. Good luck!!

Sometimes, simmering some baking soda in a little water can help. It worked on my frying pan last night...I didn't even have to get a Brillo pad out to finish cleaning it.

Put some granular dishwasher detergent (the dry stuff) in bottom with just a touch of water to cover, let sit at least overnight and rinse out.

Try boiling a potato in it, works wonders. Boil the potato until it simply falls apart.
