You sound like ur new to linux so I'll recommend ubuntu. All versions of linux are free but ubuntu is very user-friendly. You can keep windows by Dual-Booting, but if you don't have experience with that, I don't recommend that you do that. Instead you should use the wubi installer:
http://wubi-installer.org/
This installer will automatically install ubuntu and you will keep your xp. If you wanted to uninstall ubuntu, you just rerun the installer.
What this installer does is makes a virtual hard disk where all of your ubuntu files will be saved and adds ubuntu as an option to the windows bootloader. This is the easiest way to install ubuntu and keep windows
Good luck

Do a google search for linux you will get plenty of results do a little research on the various versions, pick one you like the sound of and follow what ever download links, you will need something like bit torrent to download it and it will take a long time-depending on your connection speed it could take all day,or night but have a look for Suse 10.2, Ubuntu,Fedora 7,or even Sabayon, personally I would look on eBay or search for an on line Linux shop as it will only cost you a few pounds,£5 or so and it will save all that hassle of downloading the iso image and then burning a disc.
And yes you can still have windows you will need to partition your harddrive, again do some research BEFORE you start or you might find yourself in a right old mess

Most versions of Linux, known as "distros", can be found at:
http://distrowatch.com/
The most popular version for beginners is usually Ubuntu. Ubuntu can be downloaded from:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
They also have free CDs available.
And yes, you can dual-boot with Windows, if you want.

***WARNING WARNING WARNING***
If you want to have Windows too you better make sure you know what the **** you're doing with Grub.
I had to edit grub.conf before I could get back into Windows XP. It was tons of fun. Under title "Other" I had to add...
rootnoverify
chainloader +1
Although this totally depends on where you install each operating system.
P.S. You'll need a program like Partition Magic if you want to resize your partition to allow the install of 2 operating systems.
DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOUUUUUUUUUU
