When you go shopping for new appliances look for the Energy Star, and you'll know that it's going to save you money in the long run, it's a quality machine, and you are doing something great for the environment.
Oh, and try to digitize everything that you would ordinarily use paper for!!!

As Prabha G has said, look for the ones with an Energy Star rating. I'm not sure how the system works in the US but in Europe there's a lettering system, if the same system operates in the US then look for AAA, AA and A rated appliances.
Check out the power consumption (Wattage) and go for the models with the lowest consumption that meets your needs.
Try and avoid appliances that are excessively packaged and come with features you won't need.

wash and dry dishes and clothes by hand. recycle the water.
use a solar oven, no stove or microwave.
use a hand can opener.
no mixers, blenders or toasters.
i'm shocked anyone recommended using a machine.
there are no outlets in caves, which is where you want people to really live.
