If you live in the UK. Give Mr Cook at Castle Howard Trees a ring or email link below.

Use trade at a tree nursery. Young native saplings are the cheapest. You can buy them at about 35p to 40p each if you buy 100. There will be other sites and places in your area.

As you can get a 100 trees that cheaply it seems a waste of time to grow from seed. If you have 'free' seeds in your area that you can just collect then that is even better. Either way, it is negligible as long as you are planting the trees.

Don't forget if you are planting trees make sure you add native fruit and nut trees, 3 of each at least of apple, pear, plum etc and native nut trees.

Brilliant that you are planting trees.

what do you mean buy them ?
unless the trees you want to plant are given to you you will have to buy them .

You can plant them yourself ,which is good for you
a bit of exercise never hurt any body ,

Or you can persuade or pay somebody to plant them for you.

The best way if you want to plant a lot
is seedlings in trays and then transplant them after a year or so but it takes a lot longer.

You can go to an existing tree ,ring bark a branch and tie a sleeve of compost around it ,after 4 months or so the ring barked area has developed roots ,
Saw the branch of before the ringbarking
and you can plant an almost fully grown tree at once .

The expensive and fastest way is to buy a tree in a bag ,that is already a few years old
and plant this the tree being there straight away

We always plant and give to schools for planting
trees in bags that are 1 to 2 year old already

I think it comes down to cost and convenience more than anything else.

If you plant your own trees you'll have to wait some time for them to become established and they may die before doing so. Buying a tree that is already established increases the chances of it successfully growing as it should have been carefully nurtured and be in good condition when you buy it.

Some trees are better for the environment than others due to the speed at which they grow, how long they live, how big they grow and how much carbon dioixide they sequester.

There are other considerations such as they type of soil, drainage, proximity to buildings, the type of wildlife you may want to attract etc. A decent arborist should be able to advise which trees are best and where they could be planted.

If it was myself I'd buy trees that are already established, more because they create a 'ready made' garden feature than anything else.
