I got into an argument with someone. They say a barcode [just a regular little paper barcode] will make a security detector at the door of a store go off. I disagree and think this is false. I think that the barcode does not affect the security detector. Only the special security devices installed in the packaging do.
Am I right or wrong?

Let me know what you think.

You are correct.

It's not the printed barcode that sets off the security detectors. There are magnetic tags stuck to certain items that, when they are not deactivated, set off the alarm. They get deactivated by the cashier when you pay for them, but if they are not deactivated, they'll cause the alarm to go off when you walk by the sensors.

A typical barcode does not set off a security alarm. There are some barcodes however that are specifically made to set off security alarms. In these instances the checkout/store clerk will scan the item over a special pad to demagnitize the barcode so as to deactivate it. These security barcode are usually thicker than a normal bar code seen on most packages.

As you stated, there are also special security devices on some products, i.e. electronics, clothing, etc. that need to be removed prior to leaving a store.

Well there are many types of sensors that make the alarm go off. Most of the time when your buying something electronic or something like that there is a little thing inside of it that they stick to the side of the box when it is made in the factory... and when it gets shipped to the stores they swipe it with something to activate it.. then when the cashier scans it they have something where the scanner is that deactivates it... so in this case... the barcode has absolutely nothing to do with the alarm. Now on some products the sticker that the barcode is printed on is actually a tiny microchip that has the sensor inbetween 2 sheets of sticky paper so they can stick it on the box and you would never really know that it is a alarm sensor... it works the exact same way... its put on the box when its made and is deactivate when you purchase it. SO... the conclusion... in Most cases you are right but sometimes the barcode has a senor UNDERNEATH it... so when it comes down to it the barcode itself has nothing to do with the alarm but its the microchip that is embedded into the barcode sticker... most of the time they are so small you dont know they are there... hope this cleared things up. If you have any more questions feel free to email me./...

You are right. The security detector goes off because of special security tags that are placed on the box by the store. Some things though have hidden tags inside, like most video games and accessories. The barcode itself is just printed on the package, and has nothing that will activate an alarm.

You are correct, but some of the devices do look like barcodes, but a whole range of things can make the security alarms go off.

Barcodes themselves do not, as in the real UPC code. Some security devices may have a bar code printed on them, just for looks though. It is the EM/EA action of the security device that reacts with the sensors to set off the alarm. When you purchase an item with those tags attached, the tag is deactivated.

No, barcodes do diddly-squat except get scanned at the register. Usually the security device (plastic and metal) is either hanging off a clothing item or stuck inside or on the back of a package at the drug store, etc.
You are right, the other person is wrong, so wrong.

it's not the regular price barcode. it's the antitheft security device inside the package. I bought razor blades that set off the alarm. the checker didn't run it over the pad that stops the device. I just went to make sure there was one in the box. there is.
