"Jesus answered (him), 'You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has THE GREATER SIN.'" (Jn. 19:11)

"If anyone sees his brother sinning, IF THE SIN IS NOT DEADLY, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. THERE IS SUCH A THING AS A DEADLY SIN, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but THERE IS SIN THAT IS NOT DEADLY." 1 Jn. 5:16-17

Maybe its because right above that section is a weird section talking about how water, blood, and the spirit can testify. Perhaps they end up wondering so much about what it means for water and blood to testify that they neglect to carefully read the following verses.

I know that happens to me all the time. When I come across passages I don't completely understand, my mind wanders and I end up skimming the following passages without really thinking about them.

Unfortunately, there seem to be tons and tons of passages in the Bible that say things that have no clear meaning.

These verses have to do with Gods plan and program with Israel in times PAST. Jesus Himself said that when He was on the earth, He 'came to the lost sheep of the house of Israel'.

In todays economy, there is no such thing as the greater sin or deadly. All sin is the same and all sin was dealt with at the Cross by The death, burial and resurrection of Christ.

God is no longer dealing with mankind on the basis of their sins, but on the basis of trusting in the performance of the SIN BEARER for their salvation.

Deadly sins means that they will lead to death not the physical death but the eternal death..the bible refers to this as the 2nd death (hell)..."the wages of sin is death" quote from the bible

The deadly sin that will Damn your soul is the unforgivable sin that praying has no effect on...this sin is to curse the holy ghost...meaning calling the holy ghost unholy or tainted by evil

I don't know why a fundamentalist would deny this. I know that forgiveness requires repentance. Repentance requires that we repair the harm we have done. We can't repair a murder or a rape. Therefore there are some sins that beyond simple contrition.

Because it sounds a little too Catholic and they have sworn themselves to be the enemy of the Catholic Church. Instead of looking for common ground in order to start a dialog which may lead to peace (blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God) they despise anything remotely connected to the Catholic Church---which is the true Church---so this in itself is very telling.

There are some poisons that are more deadly than others. But all poisons lead to death.
