plants need air cuz they use co2 to make sugars. soil is essential most of the times because it provides nutrients such as nitrogen which i THINK is used in making chlorophyll, the chemical used by the plant to capture the suns energy

no.1: Ok, well that answer to the first question is that Plants need air to grow. Actually, plants don't "use" air for anything except to breath. they use the sun for photosynthesis and absorb CO2 and MAKE air.
no.2: Like always, plants need soil to grow. The plants, like answer one, don't' really "use" the soil for anything except to grow and not get blown away. They take the water from the soil to grow

plants need the CO2 in the air and nitrogen components in the soil. both are used in plant metabolism to gain energy during photosynthesis.
