In a typical situation, the applicant has a family, the family has a car, the family wants the applicant to become a good driver, and lets the applicant use the family car for the driving test.
In a typical situation, long before the driving test, the applicant has had some modicum of education in the rules of the road, perhaps from family, perhaps from driver's education, then has gone to the DMV to take the written exam.
From the number of people here who are clueless about some things, like what to do if there is an accident, I think some stuff needs to be added to the written test, so that people who are clueless need to learn the answers before they get permission to be driving.
Anyhow, once the applicant has passed thw written test, the eye test, and the insurance test, they get a permit for limited driving where accompanied by an adult with a license, then when such adults say that they appear to be ready for the actual driving exam, or when the applicant is over-eager to take it anyway, that's when you setup appointment to take the driving test in a vehicle supplied, typically by family, sometimes friends.

If you are referring to the written exam, you should have a book to study from. The road skills test is to show you know how to drive and follow the laws. You need to have a licensed and insured driver bring you to the testing station. Make sure the vehicle meets the State standards such as working lights and signals etc.

If you are under 18 a parent must be with you, use your parents car. If older bring a friend with a car and borrow theirs.
Some states do not furnish cars for you to drive.
I know that Ca does.

You borrow it from a licensed driver (who obviously must accompany you).
