I recently had to put down my other two dacshunds. One for old age and the other was only 3 and got very sick. I have a 2 yr old male that is haveing back problems right now and I am trying to find companionship for him when he is well, (also trying to heal my heart.) I am looking for a small, cudly, low maintenance dog, that would also play.

All small dogs are high-maintenance because they were bred for size, and smallness affects lots of body parts that have to be smushed together to get them all in a small body.

Considering that you have had only dachshunds, but that all 3 are having or had problems, you need to look closely at your dog-raising and tending skills. The real problem may be you, not the dog.

The brightest and most playful dog I had was a Scottish Terrier, but he had a liver problem that we and the vet could never get a handle on. He lived for about 7 years, although the last year he was with my wife, who left me.

Check out any breed you are thinking to get on line for problems, as many are built-in. Dachshunds are notorious for bad backs, especially if they are overweight. And any breed needs exercise, which few people take the time to give. Just going for a leisurely walk on a leash is not enough.

I was gifted by God two years ago with a Pomeranian. He seriously just showed up at my door. He was in very bad shape and so was I (emotionally). I love my little dog--this coming from a cat person--I wouldn't trade him for the world.

I know these might be bigger than what you are looking for, but a cocker spaniel is a calm very loving dog. They get very attached to their owner and will do anything for you. Personally I like bigger dogs like Labs and Rottweilers but if I were to get a smaller dog it would be a cocker spaniel.

My mom has three Boston terriers. They are very loving dogs and they get along with other dogs pretty well. Go to http://www.bostonterrierclubofamerica.org/ to find out more.

Miniature or toy poodle. Although since they don't shed, you have to have them groomed on a regular basis. But they're good dogs to have if you have allergies to fur.

Poodles are usually very intelligent and loyal companions.
