College graduate needs to know how to find a fitting job?

I graduated a year ago with a degree in biology (b.s.). I have been trying to find a job ever since. I live in cleveland, oh and the problem I keep running into is that every job is a sales job. I AM NOT A SALESPERSON!!! I am very smart and a job that does not utilize this will be short lived. I need something that allows me to make decisions and does not involve selling. Going back to school is not an option as I need money and WILL NOT move home to live with my parents. So unless it is something that allows me to go to school part time while working full time, it is not an option. I am very open minded, all I really need is decent pay, bennefits, and the ability to think for myself so I dont get bored and quit.

I am currently working part time in retail, with little room for advancement as the only real position to move into is store management which is a very competitive sales position. My sales numbers are not good at all.

I also work part time teaching at risk 6th graders, but i am not a licensed teacher. I do enjoy the job, but the long hours of a teacher and low pay are most likely not for me.

biology is just a degree, a job with biology is not important or really even anything worth considering. Sales jobs are the only real jobs I find available.

There are several options that may work for you. As a recruiter in the medical field/health industry, you might be able to utilize your biology degree as far as matching job descriptions. It's not really sales, you are just offering companies a service and there is room for advancement and benefits. Here are some openings I found

What I did was went to Monster.com and entered entry level and the searched in Cleveland, OH and many sales jobs turned up, but if you look closely at the job titles and just skip most, you can find some good ones that might fit.

Just out of curiosity, what made you go into the study of biology? If you are getting a lot of job offers in sales positions it seems you are trying to apply for places with sales positions... which is not what I think of when I think of biology.

Then again, I'm not a biology major so I could be misinformed. Anyway, it is my general experience that when going into the sciences there are not many jobs available for bachelor's degrees. Many people go on for their masters or doctorates for this reason. I know you are leery about going back to school, but if you really want a job in your field I would recommend getting at least your masters.

Many schools offer loads of night classes that people in your situation take advantage of. I'm getting my bachelors (computer science) next semester and (luckily) I got hired on full time where I intern at. The following semester I will work a full time work week and start my master's degree program by doing exclusive night classes, b/c my school offers every class I would need to graduate as a night class as well as a regular class.

Maybe your local college doesn't offer as many, but it would be worth looking into others schools for the possibility.

You don't need a job, you need an income. A job is a TYPE of income, but is not the only SOURCE of income.

When you think that you can only get an income through a job, you limit yourself to searching for jobs, while blinding yourself to the true nature of income.

Ask yourself:

What can I do that people would be willing to pay me $____ to do?

Fill in the blank with a whole number denomination between $1 and $100, and try to think of something that people would actually pay you that dollar value to do.

When you add it up, you will realize that you can make more money per hour as an Entrepreneur, than what you would be paid per hour as an employee working for minimum wage.

The key is to be paid per transaction instead of per hour.

Imagine you found a summer job that paid you $6 an hour. Working 8 hours, your gross income (before taxes) would be only $48 dollars.

Now, asking the question:

What can I do that people would be willing to pay me $20 to do?

You would make $20 in a single transaction for doing something that may take you only 15 minutes. If you have three clients and can service them all in one hour, your gross income would be $60 per hour.

If you had enough clients to fill an 8 hour day (3 clients @ $60 an hour), that would be 24 clients each paying you $20 for a total gross of $480 for an 8 hour day (compared to $48 dollars @ $6 an hour).

That is 10 times the revenue you would make above minimum wage for the same amount of time.

Actually, you would make $480 for 6 hours of labor if you were paid $20 for every 15 minutes.

Think about what it would take to get your teaching certificate. It may not pay the world at first, but it comes with lots of benefits, one being that the school distict pays you to go back to school. Also, regular teachers have regulad days that allow you to advance and go back to school. Forthermore, go back to the college and talk to the placement office for more ideas on where to look for jobs that fit you. Good Luck.
