Cerebral palsy is usually caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. This can happen during pregnancy or at delivery. It can occur as a result of severe infection, such as meningitis. It can result from near drowning or near choking or strangulation. It is not hereditary.
There are, however, a myriad of neuromuscular diseases that can be confused with cerebral palsy. Many of these are inherited. Before having children, consider whether you need to have a neurology consultation and a consultation with a genetic counselor.
