Check your history book. That's what the Crusades in the Middle Ages were all about. Yes, I'm afraid that religions do cause wars, and will continue.

People cause war because of their selfish desires to control others. When this happens you can either stand by and watch these people destroy other lives or you can step in and remove them from the picture so that the victims can get on with life. This stepping in to save others is war. You can't reason with the bad guys because they are unreasonable to began with. This would be a nobel reason for a war.
War is also fought between two selfish parties trying to get their own way. This is not a nobel reason for war but just the state of mankind.

Any idea, concept or attribute that can be used to polorize segments of humanity has the potential to cause war. Religion happens to be one of them, along with political ideaism, race and resources.

Not the religions in, and of, themselves. It is the zealots in that particular faith of organized religion that start the wars. To quote Carlin, it goes something like this: "Do you believe in G-d? No? Bang - Dead. Do you believe in G-d? Yes? Do you believe in my G-d? No? Bang - Dead."

No, people just use religion to justify war. If they didn't have religion, they'd find another justification.

'people cause war' my arsee
religion is based on the 'us and them' theory, which deliberatly sets us against 'unbelievers'
Both the bible and Quran are filled with hatred and stuff designed to apeal to our cruel 'hunter gatherer' style murderous aspects of our minds (just look at all the computer games where you kill things and people)
If you can justify it with a religious text, then more people can get involved and suddenly it's a war. Look at hitler.
