From all the A that I got from My Q about indoctrination. Some people argue that religion has to be present in teachings because it´s part of culture. My argument is that it´s not desirable to burden oneself with out of date references if today´s world asks for more efficient functions.
If there are valid points in the bible, it´s easy to prune the tree, throw away all the superstitious stuff and leave a core of positive philosophy like "thou shalt not kill" and so forth.
Someone Answered asking who gave me the right to decide what to teach, and I´ll answer that that right was stolen from common sense by all the major religions to impose on human beings. It´s time to reassert what´s right and what´s not, and seek balance in choices. There´s no reason that the "right of religion" be abused by christianity or muslims on kids because THEY think it´s the right think to do. It´s time to be able to decide what makes sense for each of us and for our children.
Relgious people, STOP MEDDLING!

Keep your claws away from our children. They will decide if they want you when they are in age of judging if that´s what they really want!

My friend, of course you are right in theory.. But just try to put that into practice. It should be the right of every human being to grow up and make up their own minds without having been previously poisoned by the BS that inevitably accompanies religious education. But parents are awfully possessive about their kids and are going to say that they have the absolute right to raise their kids the way they want to.

Now, when parental rights to raise a kid get curtailed is when the parental acts are harmful. Then the state will step in, obviously meaning if the parent is beating the hell of of the kid. The state doesn't look at non-violent, non-physically dangerous religious training in the same way.

Using your steam engine as an example, the state is going to say you can drive a car with an antiquated system if you want to and we aren't going to curtail your right to do so unless it pollutes the atmosphere to such a degree as to be harmful to yourself or others.

The other point is this: if religious stuff could indeed be pruned so that we were left with only the good stuff like "thou shalt not kill" as you suggested, a big problem would ensure when it cam down to asking the question of what gets pruned and what doesn't.. Who makes that decision? Who says what is good stuff and what isn't? You? Me? A Fundie?

You just know we aren't going to agree. Just look at this forum as a perfect example of that.

Good food for thought. You always ask very interesting questions.

Railroads run on steam and diesel engines. Highways run on gasoline and hybrid engines.

I don't especially care for your analogy, and think that it is somewhat of a straw man.

Billions of people find comfort and strength in religion. This proves it works - at least for some. Arguing that it is "out of date" is intellectually dishonest.

Their religion is strong enough to withstand your disbelief. Is your disbelief strong enough to withstand their religion?

I agree that religious doctrine should not be imparted without parental consent, but ignoring the history and influence of religion as part of a child's public school education is an egregious error.
