I'm pretty sure it's either a tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) or a tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata). These are closely related species that eat the same things--including tomatoes/tomato plants. The way to tell them apart is that the tomato hornworm has 8 v-shaped markings, whereas he tobacco one has 7 diagonal lines. They definitely have the markings, but I can't see enough in your picture to distinguish the two.

The reasons I think it's this worm are that it's the right size with the appropriate markings and these are extremely common insects. It should have a small red or black horn at the rear end (again photo not clear), and I would guess that it was found near tomatoes or a related plant. If they're on your tomatoes, you should be able to find signs of their massive appetite. They will also leave black droppings everywhere.
They do have a pleasant side to them--they turn into moths that hover and are much like hummingbirds at night--in fact sometimes people mistake the two. Here's a great photo:

Oh, by the way...unless you have huge hands, they can get a lot bigger--up to 4 inches.

That is a tomato horn worm. It is a caterpillar that can devastate a tomato vine. If you spot one pick it off with a tweezers and squish it to save your tomato plants.

That's a green worm. Harmless unless provoked or pointed at.

Not enough detail to see what species, but it's a caterpillar, perhaps that of the Luna moth.
