My grandfather has bladder cancer, and he is now having trouble swallowing. He won't go to the doctor (he is not receiving medical treatment), so I can't ask the doctor. My best guess would be that his lymph nodes are swollen and are acting almost like an imposing structure on his trachea... but that's just a guess. Does anyone know why he might be having difficulty swallowing?

Thank you very much! I'll pick a best answer TODAY!

copy & paste - you're stupid and wrong. Go back to answering mythology questions, and stay far away from the health topics. You could not be more inaccurate. Oh yeah, I just copied my assessment of my grandfather "from another site." >eye roll< More like I, unlike YOU, actually have some knowledge of how the human body works and medical topics.

Your grandfather might have reached Stage IV -- Cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes or to distant sites (metastatic disease). Cancer of the throat or larynx may cause difficulty in swallowing.

They may or may not be related. I can think of several reasons, including yours as to why he's having difficulty. I'm assuming he's been diagnosed and is opting to not treat or has just thrown up his hands because he's overwhelmed, stubborn, whatever. Anyway, no one can accurately diagnose without examining him. I realize you are doing your best to help but if I were you I would call and make an appointment with the doctor who diagnosed him originally if he ever went -- i know you said he won't go but there has to be some reason everyone thinks it's this diagnosis -- so you can become more informed on exactly what type of cancer he has, the stage, possible treatment, etc., and then talk to your grandfather with a condensed, less scary version of the info you got from the doctor. Even with all of the US HIPPA laws, you usually can meet regarding a family member in this condition. Also, many people generalize cancer to a body part but it's really something else and they chose to label it like "bladder cancer" but it may have started as prostate cancer with bladder involvement. Best of luck and how great of you to keep trying.

Bladder cancer itself does not (so far as I know) cause trouble swallowing, unless it has metastasized so that it's appearing elsewhere in the body. Some of the drugs used in treatment might cause such symptoms, though.

He should go to the doctor, it's a very treatable disease...

How was he diagnosed with bladder cancer if he has never been to a doctor? Or was he diagnosed and than just decided not to go.

No one here can answer your question. It will just be guessing. If he has bladder cancer it make have nothing to do with his inability to swallow.

Bladder cancer and difficulty in swallowing has not relevance. You should not assess things on your own and tell this forum. also do not ask for suggestions without knowing the position fully your self. I think you have heard of the terms used by you from some one or from the internet and have told here.

First have a discussion with your General Physician and afterwards some how convince him and take to a doctor, preferably to an Oncologist, based on your assumptions and the advice given by your GP. This is the only way to do something to give some relief to him. Please do not neglect and take action immediately. We pray for him and hope he does not have any such problems as told by you. -
