is there a specific website where people post their ads when they're moving and selling their unwanted furniture...stuff, or maybe there's a gazette like back in DC????

Look in the newspaper under classified ads then look for garage sales.
You can find free stuff on CraigsList.com or Freecycle.com in your home town.

Check Freecycle: They probably have a branch in your area. Just recently I acquired some wonderful flower pots from them, and I don't live very far from DC.
Also check your local newspaper: Most have a column in the classifieds for yard sails.
