I'm just looking for a pretty basic camcorder. Is the picture clear with the Mini DV camcorders? I've heard that it's at least equal to or better than VHS movies, which for home videos is not so bad.

don't let the "mini" fool you, it is a tape system far superior VHS. The mini refers to the size of the cassette as DV comes 2 sizes, regular and mini. The regular size was never popular, but the mini size is perfect for camcorders. The DV tape system is widely used by television stations because it is smaller, lighter and better resolution than betacam. The only drawback is they did not make a home deck version for playback as DVD became the replacement for VHS rental movies. you playback directly from the camcorder or load into a computer for burning a DVD.

People will have different opinions on the quality of Mini DV camcorders based on the type of camcorder one uses. There are a wide and varying quality spectrum of Mini DV camcorders, the best being HDV cams. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_dv to learn more about the technology itself. Then move to the link below to learn about HDV camera technology.

To experience the highest quality of some of the best Mini DV cams available (HDV), you must have an equally good output (HD DVD) and monitoring source (HDTV), or at the very least.. you can use a computer with a large, high quality monitor.

Having a microphone enter is usually a sturdy element, the extra suitable zoom isn't. do you are able to desire to checklist at evening? Get pictures from the two camcorders and spot what they are like - edit clips from the two camcorders into one video so as which you get prompt comparisons. in case you are able to organise issues such which you're evaluating them blind (i.e. you do no longer understand which clips got here from which camcorder) that is desirable.

The quality of the video depends on the camcoder (how good it is). I use mini DVs and they work just fine.
