I'm an LDS girl, and very proud of it. But I go to a relatively bad school--there are several kids who do drugs and drink (or at least claim they do), a few kids are in gangs, and most everyone swears and talks about sex. I at least have friends in my Young Women's group, but in school I'm pretty much all alone because I don't want to talk about those things, much less engage in them. Help?

acacard--I'm in that "cult" because I know that it's the true church and it's Heavenly Father's plan for me.
mormon_4_jesus--I'm sure that there are, but it's extremely difficult to find them.
LDS Mom--I'm in 8th. That's a good tip, but the worst kids at my school are involved with band and volleyball, so it's kind of hard to root them out. Thanks for the answers though, everyone!

Hey, you are me about 15 years ago!

That is a really hard position. On one hand, you want to be accepted and on the other do you really want to be accepted by these people???

I decided very young that I would obey the Word of Wisdom, the Law of Chastity and try to obey the other commandments. That is a decision that I have never, ever regretted. I did go to my Grad party, but was ashamed to be there and felt terrible after, not because I drank, but because there was no Spirit there.

Many years after high school, a friend told me that she was proud of how I conducted myself when we were in school. At the time I thought that her opinion of me was really low, and she thought I was a loser. I was pleased to know that that was not so!

I would say take an active stand. Be a happy, wonderful, loveable person. I would say not to be overly pious or "holier than thou" but do know that the quiet things you do today make you a leader tomorrow. Live so that you don't have regrets. Live so that you can be an example. Live to show your peers what kind of youth the Saviour expects us to be. And don't worry about what they think.

As for being alone...well, God is always with you. Even the Saviour felt alone and during the darkest time in His life. Do your best, pray always and be a happy person. You will draw people in because of the beauty of your person and the purity of your life.

When I was in 8th grade I remember it was the same thing, I wasn't active in the church but lived some of the standards and I looked for people who shared the same interests and hung out with them. Even if it meant be being called a geek and nerd. It is hard, I know.

Stay true to the church no matter what.

What grade are you in? Find the good kids. Usually the ones involved in clubs or sports. Do you go to school with seminary kids? That is where you should start. There is always a goodie-goodie group. You just need to find them. But most importantly, pray for help. Heavenly Father knows you heart and your concerns. Hang in there! CTR

Think of it this way; Christ went through his entire life being something He was scorned and eventually crucified for. People told him he was wrong. The Saducees tried to trick him. People were then, much as they are now even in some of the answers to your question. Never the less, Jesus knew he had a purpose and a mission to accomplish here on earth...just as you do. Your mission here isn't the same, but like Jesus, you won't be able to accomplish it if you give in to the temptations and difficulties that come from sticking to your beliefs. And don't forget this - you might be flagellated for your beliefs but you're not likely to be tarred and feathered or crucified for them.

Hang in there. I once saw a wonderful piece of needle work that had a profile of Christ's face and said, "I never said it would easy, just that it would be worth it."

I grew up under similar circumstances. I was the only LDS in my class and that made it VERY difficult. Keep a prayer in your heart!

Could your mom homeschool you? No one should have to go to school in such a horrible environment.
