I should probably add, that I tried needle nose pliers, but there is no room in the slot, and nothing to grasp to pull it out.

try gently drilling a hole in it and threading in a screw. then pull it out with pliers. You may have to take off the oil pan and push it up from the bottom if you are really worried about the dip stick.

Follow the dipstick tube down to the engine and see if it has a tab with a bolt bolted to the engine. Remove the bolt. Find a new bolt with enough length that it has about one inch of bolt that has no threads and fits the inside diameter of the tube, and stick it in the tube. Grasp the outside if the tube with a pair of Visegrips and twist first one way and then the other and pull out the tube. If the dipstick doesn't come out with it, it will be sticking out of the engine where the dipstick came out. Align the tab, if it has one, close to the bolthole and using the bolt inserted in the tube, drive the tube back into the engine.

Simple solution for Jeep Cherokee:
The top of the plastic handle broke off when I was checking the oil level. As I tried to remove the broken oil dipstick, I only managed to push it further down the tube. It took me a while to figure out how to remove it. Simply heat up a narrow piece of metal (old coat hanger worked for me) that’s long enough to reach the plastic top of the broken dipstick (you can use a cigarette lighter, Bunsen burner, etc.). Heat the metal until it glows red (really hot) then push it against the broken plastic top of the old oil dipstick and the plastic will melt around the metal. Just wait about 1 minute or so for the metal and melted plastic to cool (the plastic will harden around the metal) then pull. The old oil dipstick will come right out along with the metal / old coat hanger.

The dealer or a shop can drsain and remove the oil pan--then push the stick remnant out from below. The only way and the easiest way--It gets rid of sludge too--so it pays to drop and clean the oil pan.

tie a strong string to a piece of medal so it make a T like contraption, push it down the tube very carefully and when it reaches the bottom it will be an upside down "T" _I_ it will wedge itself on the bottom of the dipstick and pull out with care. good luck.

Buy the correct dipstick from your local Citroen dealer. Guessing your oil level by using other methods, or a dipstick that's "about right" is asking for trouble. Too much or too little oil in your engine can cause much more expensive damage than the price of a new dipstick! :-)

Fashion freshly chewed bubble gum to the handle so it will fit down into the tube stick it to the shim and slowly remove. (or quickly, it may take more than one try.) If you can't reach ask about a telescopic magnet at the parts store. It may be worth a trip to the mechanic.

magnet, either telescoping one that will fit inside or try a really powerful one on the outside and work it out slowly.
