I have hip problem and also a 73 year old grandmother who lives with me. We have 3 dogs that really love us and we love them, but they are always under our feet when we try to walk from one room to another. I am afraid I will step on one of them and hurt'em or one of us trip and fall. I have tried using a sharp voice and telling them to "move it!" and lightly booting them in the butt( not kicking ). I am out of Ideas. I put a this same question on last night and got a couple good ideas but would like as much input or as many various ideas as I can get (better chance of finding something that works)
The dog are of various ages and I just started training them about 3 months ago. They are very smart( I wish I had trained them earlier!) They know sit, down, crawl, stay, up(on 2 legs ), dance(going in circles on two legs ), and speak. We are working on playing dead at the moment. They are so smart it is amazing how quick they catch on!

These dogs are our babies, so any smarties out there who would like to tell me to get rid of them or that we shouldn't have dogs can kiss my bootie!! (happened in the question I asked last night.) I expect a few smart butts, so I don't take it personal, just know that we love our dogs with all our hearts and would never get rid of them jsut because they are inconveinaint (mispelled?)!!

They know stay? Stay should work. Have them sit, stay, and continue the stay command while moving to a new room. When you have gotten situated, you can release them of the command. (A good way to teach this is with food. Have them sit before they eat. Lay the food down and repeat "stay", and back away from the room. If they try to eat, remove the food and start over. Mine caught on the first day)
If all else fails, contact a trainer. I work in a rehab facility for hip fractures/replacements, and it's a very difficult thing to heal from, and very time consuming. Good for you for addressing this problem. And good luck with your training.

Try carrying around a squirt bottle and while you are walking spray in front of you. Any dog that comes too close gets a squirt. They will learn real quick that getting too close when you are walking equals a squirt in the face. They'll steer clear.

You sound like you have some very smart dogs indeed!
