I have been trying to make him comfortable, thinking he was ready to go. However, he has moments of alertness and keeps getting out of bed to go outside or drink water. I cannot get him to eat anything. He does not seem to be in any pain, but surely he can't continue this way.

Wanted to thank everyone who took the time to respond with the help I needed to make that decision. It only took a few responses for me to realize what I was doing, and I took him to the vet and had him put to sleep. It WAS the right thing to do, but I had so hoped he would just go to sleep. Now I know he is happy and healthy again, playing with all my other beloved pets who have gone before him.

I would take him to the vet and get the vets advice on whether or not to put him down.

Without knowing the full story, it's impossible for us to make any type of comment on your question. This is really something that needs to be discussed between you and your vet. It sounds to me, if your dog really is in distress, he's probably in pain (if not constant, he's in pain at least the majority of the time), and a lot of it. If you are already asking how long he can survive like this, my guess will be, for as long as you let him.
We had a miniature dachshund who's disks in her back were calcifiying. She lived a normal life for a year after we found out. Last Halloween, she aggravated her disks to a point where she was in constant pain. We had to put her on 100% bedrest (in her kennel) and steroids for 2 weeks. She recovered and was good for a week until she relapsed again. This time, she was in constant pain, shaking from the pain, didn't want to play with her favorite toy, didn't want to play with our other dachshund, and barely would eat anything. The night after Thanksgiving, she was in so much pain, it took us 3 hours to get her to sleep (our doxie's sleep with us). She was trembling from the pain, and couldn't get comfortable. We gave her baby aspirin which helped her to relax. It wasn't until her sister cuddled up with her that she finally relaxed and fell asleep. That was the point when we decided that we couldn't let her suffer anymore. The next morning, we called our vet and arranged to put her down immediately. Even though we didn't want to, we knew it was the best decision for her that we made.
Point is, if you are asking how long your dog and suffer like that, then you need to get up the courage and start thinking about putting him out of his pain and suffering.

first take the pup to the vets for a check up from what you explain this pup isn't as old as you were told were you given any paper work and has the pup had any vaccines or been wormed a good breeder would have the puppy wormed at 1,4,6,8, and 10 weeks then it needs worming every month a 8 week old pup should be on solid food and no reason for the puppy formula soak the food in water and give the pup moistened food until you can get the pup to the vets

My 6 yr old shih-tzu had kidney failure and I sympathize with you.My vet told me he had 2 wks! But Ziggy man lasted 3 more years ! He had to eat diet dog food-walthams-I cried and told him he had to eat this food.Maggie( His wife) was great help! She ate the ilky dog food, just so Ziggy would eat it.They were both reared on human food! He lived 3 yrs more!! At his end I saw him trying to eat-he couldn"t!!So I gave him human food! He couldn't eat but a little. This lasted a week. Then he was eating peas and finally couldn't eat any more! I told Ziggyman to let me know when he had to go with God. He was such a saint! He was a kisser 150 at a time! I was not going to let him suffer.I was holding him on the couch and he gave me a hug and big kiss(even tho his mouth was so dry. Then he couldn't drink water! He told me he had to go!I told him we will always be together in spirit and I called the vet to come to the house to put him to sleep-I wasn't gonna let my lil man die in the vets-He hated the vets! My vet came and it was over in a couple minutes! Then I knew for sure Zigman was a saint! He had lovd to watch the birds on the deck. half hour after he died a bird flew in my house! Then a hundred birds flew past the deck.!!! Then the dog up the road(who never let us pet him came to our front door and let my husband pet him as if to say he was sorry! And the two dogs tied in my front neighbors howled! I always said he was a saint and maggie an angel-then I knew it was true!!I am crying now It was soo sad! But he did not suffer and died at home! The angels say your dog stays with you til you pass-and i believe that. Now to answer you-once your dog can't drink and gets real weak that is the time to end his pain. When he can't drink-you will see the weakness come. hope i helped-You watch and you will know.

My mom kept her yorkie alive for too long because she would have better moments BUT the fact is if he can't do the things that make him happiest, It's time to give him a painless death instead of trying to keep him alive for yourself.....Your dog doesn't fear death & neither should you.

I know you love him and its hard to let go but please don't let him suffer. Do the merciful and responsible thing. Its going to hurt but at least you will know you helped him be free. Watching him suffer to the very last will hurt more. Trust me.
You may not have to put him down right now, but either way, go to the vet.

I think the best thing to do, would be to have your vet see him, and tell you if he should be put down or if you should wait!
