Personally I think that if you give something away, it is no longer your business what they do with it. But, if you don't want your charity of choice to use your donation the way they see fit, then check out different charities, and see what they do with it.

The Salvation Army does resell but they also donate clothing, furniture and household items to families that have been burned out of their homes.

I know this because I am an American Red Cross Family Services Caseworker and we refer families who have had house fires to the Salvation Army for just this service. It helps these people out alot to receive these items for free.

If you really have some big issue about your stuff being sold then donate it to a battered women's shelter, or a homeless shelter or sometimes there is a Catholic charity that has some kind of clothing/goods donation service.

But even if it's resold, the Salvation Army uses the money to assist those in less fortunate situations, so it all goes to help those in need.

AS a Red Cross volunteer, I can truthfully tell you, every time that there is a large disaster or someone is affected by a home fire/tornado/flood etc. we give them referrals to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Helping Hands to name a few, those agencies GIVE the clients clothing to replace what was lost. There is no cost to the client the client can pick what he/she likes and I believe that they give them 7 days worth of clothing in addition to any needed furniture, etc.. I will add another thing, Goodwill employs so many people with disabilities, without your donations, these people could not gain the necessary self esteem, the pride in themselves or be self sustaining people. They are a wonderful organization

I have donated to a battered women's shelter and after asking if they resold the items, they explained that they (and most do) have a resale shop. The process they use is to allow the women they are helping to go and "shop" at their store at no cost to them. This is done where they have first choice and the remaining unused items are sold for funds for the shelter.
They have found that the women feel better about going to this store to choose the free things they need than any other way of distributing it to them.

Another option could be a local church. You don't need to be a member and they provide help to many families in your neighborhood that need help the most.

Look for a local shelter for battered women or maybe even a half way house. Those kind of places always get people coming in with nothing and they need things. I've worked at a half way house for women. We would get people out of jail or prison and they had absolutely nothing. Battered women shelters alot of the women just leave w/o anything and need things. There's also sober living communities that people live together in like an apartment setting and they need clothes and furniture and stuff like that.

as far as I know the Salv Army does not resell, they give to people who need it. Goodwill resells. Look up homeless shelters in your area to donate; they may take only certain things but call & ask what they take. Also depending on what you have, maybe a local community center or church that has a shelter or soup kitchen also has donation center..

oh also freecycle.com you can list for free & give stuff away

You should visit www.craigslist.com all of those people are local just choose the city you live in. It's totally free and easy to post ads and be sure to include that you don't want people to resell and that you would like someone that is in need of your things to have them.

Call your local domestic violence agency. Many times they give these items to women/children who have left all of their possessions behind. These items are given to them to establish a new life.... The numbers are normally listed in the yellow pages.... (social services section).... God bless****
