Of course he was a good teacher! I'm sure he explained much more to his apostles than he did to the general public.

He was lousy for not writing down his teaching for the rest of us later on, he trusted his disciplines to transfer the knowledge. If he had written the Bible himself, none of the massive wars and confusion that happened in early Christianity would have been eliminated. The best teachers all write textbooks!
