Its like this. When I first started working during the Christmas rush, they gave me all the hours I wanted to work, because basically I was working as a temp. Then they wanted to keep me and gave me a 60 day probation. I passed it and they hired me. But recently, This job haven't been giving me hours to work. For one, I am on child support, so that makes me short on my payments. And two, I cant make enough money for myself if I am working 4-5 hours a week. Is there something that I can do, besides talking to the store manager? Because all I get is the same ol answer.....When I have hours to give you, I will give it to you. It's bad enough I have to remind him to punch me in and out since our store is being remodeled. Theres got to be someone that I can talk to. I am in chicago, so if anyone has some advice from within that area, it will help me plenty. One of my friends told me to call labor laws on them. What do you think about this idea, and if so, how to go about it?

I have signed an contract because I am Hired as a part-time worker and have been working there since December. I mean, I am loosing hours because of three things. 1 15 new employees had been hired. 2. The store managers get a bonus on their checks for cutting store hours and still be efficient in all areas. 3. They make all their employees work out of their work descriptions. I think that is unfair. Thats why I feel there should be something I can do about it. And yeah, I have been looking for another job. Thats basically all I can for the time being. But until then is there anything I can do about it?

Yeah, its a chain store. TRU. And no I am not lazy. Its not the fact that I am a dead beat dad, for one I asked my mother of my child to file child support for the love of my daughter. Not that is none of your business nofx, but I must clarify that this is not the situation. So your comments is not really needed anymore, but thanks for your time. I just think that no hours is a load of bs. For one, I know its a load because they have the nerve to tell me that is a machine that does the store hours. Yeah right. The store manager and front end manager take turns doing the schedule. Every week. And last week, they was bragging in the break room on how much extra time they have to give out. But how come they didnt give me none? Seems kinda odd. I also have to go talk to them again today because I worked 17 hours last week and they only gave me 10 hours.

Where do you work? Are you a member of a union? If not join one. 4-5 hours a week is not enough to live on. You have been hired and should thus be entitled to a certain number of hours a week as you have passed your 60 day probation, especially as you are a part-timer. It sounds like your boss is trying to get rid of you. You should do something about this! You do not have to just accept this like lots of people here seem to be saying. Clearly the hours are there or these 15 new people would not have been hired. This is done to increase profits and have a bigger pool of labour from which to select workers. It is great for them, but difficult for those working in order to survive. It is EXPLOITATION. Getting another job is not the solution. I am sure alot of other people at your workplace feel the same way. Are other people getting shifts? If so, then you are being discriminated against and you have a right to fight this. If there is no union at your work, create one. Either way my advice is to organise. At the very least speak with your union delegate. The boss needs you, you don't need the boss.

You can always ask for more hours... but don't be surprised when you don't get them. Your manager has a labor budget and how many hours is considered part time in your company should be outlined in the company handbook. At 16 and still enrolled in school the law is pretty strict and you can only do up to 20 hours a week. So on a 2 week schedule the maximum hours you would be allowed when school is in session is 40. But your job ultimately makes the final decision. If your manager only has so many hours allotted for your kind of job then that is all that you will get. You have no guaranteed right to a set amount of hours.

The friend who told you to call labor laws doesn't know what they are talking about. There are no labor laws dealing with the amount of hours you receive. Unfortunately, you are at the mercy of your employer when it comes to the hours they give you. I know you said you have talked to your manager but have you told him told him that you are going to have to find another job if he can't give you more hours? If you do, and you are a good worker he will try to keep you. You also have to remember that he just might not have the hours. You might also thing about going to another store that could give you more hours. Is this a chain outlet?

sounds like you have a lot of time to find another job!
You were hired as temp and that is just how it is.No employer has to guarentee you hours unless if you are in a legal binding contract to work a certain amount of hours per week and be paid if you are not given those hours.

It sounds to me like you do not want to work but do not want to go to jail for being a deadbeat dad.You can't have your cake and eat it to! GET A REAL JOB, they are out there. You just have to look.
