wondering about the trim though. The wall paint is a flat white. Should the trim (door frames, window frames, floor molding) be a semi gloss or will that look awkward against a flat white wall?

It isn't really a "flat" paint. I just used the word to express that it isn't a gloss of any sort.

It is a Satin Paint, NOT flat. White was chosen because as I said it is a basement, not much light.

yes semigloss would be fine.
note: that flat paint will be awful to clean.

Well, sounds like your son's landlord decided to cut costs (as lots of landlords do) and he used plain old primer or ceiling paint on the walls. That's gonna be hard to keep clean...

As for the trim, etc., it's a good idea for it to be either semi-gloss or gloss, since the trim is what we usually put our hands on the most often and often has fingerprints on it. You know that since you raised a son... So, yeah, go for a bit of gloss on the trim. I prefer a satin finish, which is easy to clean and won't be such a stark contrast with the flat paint...

Oh... and don't lose sleep or time over those people here who are blasting you cause you're talking about your son's appartment... they're just jealous.... or stupid... take your pick!

A semi gloss or high gloss trim will look very nice and will be much easier to keep clean. I have found that spot cleaning flat paint requires elbow grease and generally needs to repainted to make it look it really look fresn and clean.

Hey Prof ... I think the key word in your question is "his" ... as in "his basement apartment"!

That being said, do you really think that 'your' preference for color is important here? Relax ... if he wants to add some color later, it's his decision ... not yours!

semi-gloss is the best choice. it won't have that awkward 'why did they do this?' kind of look. :)

a satin will be a little better since it isn't as glossy
