dear billie
I have cancer and wont be alive for so long... going to a hospital may cause you some pain or worry but still it is worth to go. think positive about it :-)

Listen to me. You are scared and worried about something that you really don't know about. You are going into the hospital for a minor surgery. You need to tell the doctor how frightened you are and he will give you something for anxiety. Your parents won't listen to you because you need to have the procedure and they know that you will be fine. Have your Mom call the doctor and he will prescribe something to help you stay calm. Ask your Mom or Dad to stay with you during the time you are either given medication to sleep or ask if they or maybe a nurse can stay by your side. They will do that and she could hold your hand and help you have a bit more confidence. Everything will be fine. Many people get panic attacks when they need to go to the hospital and haven't been there before. I will say a prayer for you and you pray that God will help you to feel calm. You'll see, everything is going to be fine and it will be over before you know it.

I'm sure you will be okay... I am 16 too and I just had a minor operation! And I scare really easily... If I can do it then you can too! Just try not to think about it... and what helps is if before you go to the hospital have a light snack or read a magazine, maybe music can help. Or you can call your friends. Don't worry I'm sure it will work out! And you can email me if you really need to. I hope this helps and I hope everything works out 4 you! =)

I feel for you being a young person i assume but in this day and age minor ops are really nothing. the worst thing is going hungry from midnight until they operate. They will fool around hook up a i.v. in your arm, reassure you and the anthologist will give you a pep talk and the next thing you will know is opening your eyes with someone offering you a drink of some beverage, usually coffee. Ask previous to the op if you can have something to drink when you wake up and they will have it there for you.

Billie Jo please try to calm down. I know these things can be scary, but if it weren't necessary the doctors wouldn't have suggested it. I remember having to have my gall bladder out, look I'm an old lady here in my 50's! Only other surgery in my life was to birth my daughter a C-section. They get you all comfy in a nice open back robe and put you on this terribly uncomfortable bed for awhile. Then they wheel you into surgery, and put nice warm blankets on you and as soon as they give you the first shot, you just simply say "night night". And when you wake up it will all better again. My only problem is I can't take gas and it made me throw up! Not a pretty sight at 50! Sweetie, it will be alright. Soak it for all it's worth, ice cream, fudge, gummy worms, whatever you want, believe me your parents will give it to you. Go ahead it will be fine. Hugs from Minnesota

Ok, you first need to calm yourself down. You are making yourself very upset and that is not going to help you at all.

You don't say what the surgery is for, but if it is totally necessary, then accept it, don't fight it. Fighting it only makes it worse, right? So, rest in the knowledge that you are in good hands and that your parents have made a good decision for you.

If this will help you to have a better, healthier life, it is positive. We all have to go through things that we don't want to go through in life. When that happens, understand that fear is something that is destructive, go in the opposite direction of it.

Visualize yourself in the hospital, take deep, slow breaths to relax. See that you will get a nice sedative to relax you further and enjoy the feeling. They will give you anestethic to put you into a deep, restful sleep that is very soothing.

Soon you will be home and doing well and it will be just another memory.

I have had major surgery and understand that it is something new and that can be frightening. However, we make it worse than it really is and need to change that thinking. Your recovery depends on you being in a good frame of mind.

Ask God for His peace, strength and comfort. I will pray for you and ask for a speedy recovery. Take care sweetheart, it will all be just fine, you'll see.

Its ok to be scared. If you dont think your parents will listen try talking to a grandparent or aunt/uncle. If they dont listen try a trusted friends parents. I am sure somewhere around you their are many adults that will listen to your fears. Just dont do anything to hurt yourself or your hospital stay could be an extende one. Alot of people are scared before an operation.

No shame in feeling scared, remember all things come to pass, I have had many big ops, but you really do not feel a thing, just a huge sense of relief when it is all over, go on, you are braver than you think, prove it, and feel stronger.

I had minor surgery when i was 16, yeah it freaked me out not to the point you've described, look its human nature but the sooner its done, the sooner you can be at ease, if you need to, talk to you doctor about how concerned you are, he/she should be able to reasure you and help you through... good luck, hope it goes well
